What the heck is going on?

I've been fighting this thing fer two darned days now.

How come I can't get into a Win 98 machine from a Win XP Pro machine?

I can access the workgroup and the computer does show up, but when I try to go in, it tells me I don't have access.

I can't ping it, can't access it's shared printer or shared files and I can't enter. Help anyone?

Thanks,

Allan

When you set up the network on the xp machine it asks if you want to make a disk for other machines to access them. did you do it?

Hi Jack,

Dunno, I souldn't have to do that, should I? Adding one new OS and then having to change all the other machines down the line to accomadiate just the one new one?

Don't ya think I should be able to just "access" the derned thing?

If I did run that disk thingy, is it gonna mess up the rest of the other machines on the network?

Allan

Hello Allan
No it jsut allows the 98 and such to access xp as they changed it some (imagine that). You just create the disk then install on the 98 machine. It should not interfere with anything else.
But If you cannot get to the xp and can get elsewhere on the 98 machine the disk should fix it as it adds a xp client.

You're not changing the operating system on the 98 machine, just letting it communicate with the XP machine. I had to do that disk thingy too, I have 2 XP machines, a ME machine, and a 98 machine all networked. Works fine.

Did you try using the hot wrench and BF hammer? Sometimes you just have to show them you are serious.

Is the win98 machine getting a IP Address. Go to DOS prompt and run Ipconfig .. should have ip address. Then ping the address rather then the name. If no ip address Ipconfig /renew_all.. check default Gateway, Subnet mask.

Yep,

I'm pingin' the address. When I do, that hard drive on the '98 machine just "rattles", but the Win XP machine doesn't seem to catch an answer back.

I've played with the duplexing til I'm black in the face.. The only way it will make the Win '98 machine show up is with it set to 100-full duplex (which it is).

It is something in this Win XP setup, 'cause I can reboot to Win 2K and all is well on the same darned machine (different drive and OS).

Dunno,

Allan

Do you have the "file and printer sharing" enable on the win wp pro firewall? Under the exceptions tab on the firewall setting that come with windows xp pro. Might be worth a shot.

Hi Bud,

Didn't we look at that and decide that your server was rejecting the linking process?

Dunno, might have been someone else.

I starting to hate computers more than the ponies. :>)

that is what we decided but i don't think that's the problem. i have regular access to four different computers, the closest two being 30 miles apart. i've loaded pictures to different hosts all over and have tried to pull different picture from all over. all i get are little boxes with X's in them. single pics are no problem..... .

left carrot img "space" src quotation address quotation right carrot

did i get it right?

Cssey, I think your problem is, you don't use any quotation marks it should be carrot img space src=space image url carrot, Also you want to make sure there are no spaces in your picture name...hth

Allan, what machine is acting as the gateway or dns server? The dns server will resolve the names when you try and ping from one to another by name instead of ip address. Are both of these machines connected into a switch ( or hub ) or into something that is acting as a gateway ?

I suspect the problem lies in the protocol setup on the two machines, remember if you want to access files and printers you need the netbeui protocol installed as well as tcp/ip, the file and printer sharing acts over netbeui ( netbios ). Also check the setting about what you are logging into, windows logon, network logon, etc. Those might be causing you some problems as well.

Anyhow...just some thoughts. Good luck!

I think TimS has pointed you in the right direction. Also, make sure the server service is started.....
