Was given a Gravely GMT 9000 tractor. 26 hp 4cyl Renault engine. After fixing a few minor problems , I am down to the carb, It was full of debris, so I cleaned it and then replaced the diaphragm which was leaking. Now it will only run with me choking it with my hand over it. As soon as I open my fingers slightly, it will want to die. I have tried setting mixture different and adjusting diaphragm a little. The carb is a Solex 32DIS. What next? How do I adjust correctly? Thanks, Dennis

Take it completely apart as far as you can, watch the screws and jets and don't ruin them taking it apart. I have found that NAPA Laquer Thinner works really well. Gets the varnish off better than regular carb. cleaner. Let it soak completely immersed in the thinner for two to three days. Take it out and blow out all the holes. You might have to soak it again to get all the varnish out. Then get a can of spray carb. cleaner with the little tube spray nozzle and spray all the holes to make sure they are open. Then make sure you put the parts and gaskets back together right. Should work, has never failed me.

Probably the most important thing about rebuilding a carburetor is to get it really, really clean. Get a can of cleaner, disassemble the carb and soak all the metal for a couple of days. Blow out all the holes with compressed air, then use carb cleaner in a spray can to verify that they are really clean. If they aren't let it soak again overnight and repeat. Repeat until it's really clean and then reassemble with new gaskets, etc.and adjsut float level and jets. For stubborn deposits in small passage ways use monofillament line not wire or drill bits to clean them out.

Either carb still dirty per Bo, fuel supply restriction to carb, or you have one heck of an intake air leak. Bottom line is too much air or not enough fuel.

Carb still dirty...you'll need to take it complete apart and super clean it. Get some B-12 spray and spray every possible little hole and channel..watch your eyes and don't spray any plastic or rubber. If you get it running by cutting off the air, all that means is that you aren't getting enough fuel and guess what...still dirty.
