Every few days the thing just dies. The outside temperature doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.

After it dies, it cranks well but doesn't seem to fire.

After sitting for about 5 minutes it will start right up and then run fine for another few days.

This truck isn't used very often and it doesn't die like this each time I use it.

I have replace rotor, distributor, plug wires, plugs, etc. I don't have a clue what could be going on. Coil or ICM problem ? ? ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It has a 302 with an auto transmission.

I also have a 79 Ford with the 302 but with the 5 speed and use it for wood hauling and snowplowing. That control modual is the usual problem. Some last for years and others for weeks. I try to keep a spare in the truck. Disconect battery before changing the modual seems to make them last longer.

Thanks to all who replied to my question. It looks like I have a few things to check out under the hood. I will keep you all informed of my progress. Those offers to buy the pickup seem way too generous especially when I'm sitting on the side of the road.

Thanks again! IHC RED

Like others said, the ignition module on the inner drivers side fender(kinda 4"x4" looking box with a couple wires).Mine went in the winter quite a few years ago(no longer have it),uncle was following me..we were hauling firewood...coasted off the side of the road..he came over, lifted the hood and threw a handful of snow on the module and held it on there for a couple min.

Told me to hit the key,and it fired right up.Got two at the junk yard..put the one on and stuck the other behind the seat for a spare..ran the truck a few more years with no probs, and the spare module was still laying behind the seat when I sold the truck.

had an 1986 iroc camero with a remanufactured engine that would not recrank after running any length of time. tried everything without solving problem. turned out to be fuel pump in gas tank that had been replaced about a year before. car was ok after that until someone rearended it. this may not be your problem, just my 2cents worth

Yes. I also recomend replaceing the electronic control device which sits on the fender.
Try disconnecting and reconecting the terminals first. The control modules did go quite often.
Buy a known good one from a scrap yard if you have doubts. Or borrow one from a friend to try for a while.

Also, when it stops, carefully touch the ignition coil. If it is real HOT, then change it.

Thats the same time that I was a Service Manager at a Ford Dealership. If you are losing spark, take the distributor cap off. Inside there is one screw holding down the electronic module. take that screw out and put it on the grinder and shorten it. Ford had a problem with that screw being to long and bottoming out. That screw tightens down on the ground lug for the ignition system. There was a service bulliten. It was a mechanic in my shop that actually figured out this problem and brought it to Ford Motor Company"s attention. Hope this helps.

BTW The problem was, the engine would actually die while running. Would crank but no fire. Let it set for awhile and engine components would cool enough that the screw would make connection inside distributor again. Engine would then start. If this sounds like your problem, try my fix. Gene

Red,

I've never owned a 79 Ford pickup and don't have any experience working on one that I remember, so you can tell how much my opinion matters.

Having said that, I once had a 1971 Buick that used to die on me intermittently, at the most inopertune times. I was afraid to drive it since it once quit as I was merging into heavy traffic and almost caused a big-time wreck.

After lots of messing around, I finally found a crack in a flexible fuel line that ran above the differential. It was apparently opening and closing so that when it opened the fuel pump sucked air and when it was closed, it sucked gas. I replaced the flexible fuel line, and never had any more trouble.

Good luck with your problem determination.

remove and clean all the connectors for ecm, coil, etc. They had a corosion problem in that general time frame. They make a special grease to put in the connecotrs. Also, the next time it dies look closely for a wet spot on the ignition, possibley from a pin hole in a radiator hose or heater hose. I learned that last the hard way once. it would dry enough to start in jsut a few minutes.

Have you tried changing out the little electronic box on the fender well? I had a late 70's pickup like that, and replaced it a couple times. Usually it was summer time when I run into that though.

Obviously this truck neads a new home, it seems it's unhappy with it's current situation. That being said, i will gladly pay you 100 dollars cash for it and be there tomorrow to pick it up. After all, you do want the truck to be happy don't you?

If it dies when it is warm like that, I would suspect the coil. The ECM went out on my '79 one time. It wouldn't fire at all untill I replaced it. When it dies on you have you checked to see if it has spark, or is getting fuel?

I had a 79 that did the same thing only mine would start right back up. It was the ignition module on the fender. It could also be your pickup coil inside the distibutor.
