Well it's Saturday night, 6:44 pm. I'm bored.

We have a 30 mph wind outta de N and temp is below freezing with sleet and ice and all the usual winter goodies. Tractor is under a carport type shed with de N wing blowing right down her guggler.

I'm headed out to the shed -carport thing- right now and I am going to kick off the old 40 year ole JD 4010 babe with no starting aids just for the heck of it. She'll probably hit in 3 to 5 seconds, like she always does in cold weather. If she doesn't, I'll get back on here and apologize to you for her short comings, but don't hold your breath. Grin. Green is gold and got the name the old fasioned way; she earned it..... .Sorry Red, and Orange.

See ya later,

Mark

Good morning Mark.

Nope, was out in the barn getting a truck out yesterday, and gave it some thought as I walked around and looked them over, but didn't do it. Did fire up the second truck because had the keys on me, and smoked the place out pretty good. It's been setting for weeks. Guess I'll fire them up today before I head back to IL. I was trying to remember if I'd added P/S to the diesel the last time I fueled them up. I usually do all year, but I don't think that I did the last time. At least I don't remember if I did.

Speaking of additives. I use 55 gallon drums which I have installed on an old pu truck bed trailer. When they are empty, I just hook the trailer to the p/u and go to the nearest town and get the farm diesel. I can seal each tank and only open the one I want. Works pretty good for reducing contamination, and I have the water absorbing filter in the fuel line between the tank and the outlet.

Anyhew....I put 1/2 quart of ATF and 1/2 qt of Marvel Mystery Oil in each 55 gallon drum B4 filling it up. Have 7 diesel tractors and not one has had any type of fuel/injector/valve type problem. Dunno if it is doing any good, but whatever is going on, it's working.

Best,

Mark

Hey ya Mark. You"re the second person I"ve heard using ATF, but never heard of using Marvel. Ran into a guy years ago that added a quart of ATF per every 100 gallons, so your 1/2 quart per 50 or so lines up. He swore it kept the injectors clean. I wonder about wax preventing though, and if it doesn"t, will it play nice with P/S or Howes.

And by the way, didn"t fire them up before headed back to work in IL. Had things that had to get done for others. Is ok, are family and the tractors will still be in the barn next weekend when I get home. Am sure are going to struggle. Worst case, will put kerosene heaters between them. I"ve done it before. One degree in the barn today.

txgrn: No apploigies necessary to this old red guy. I farmed with Farmalls all my life, 16 of them bought new or close to new. My last new tractor was a 6 cylinder turbo charged diesel Deere. 13,000 hours to it's first engine rebuild and it fired up better in cold weather than any of my three Farmall 6 cylinder diesels. Not hard to see why those once red farms are now green.

Now, if you want to go back to the old gassers of the 50s RED had you beat. Those old 6 volt 4 cylinder gassers would fire up in any weather. My experience was H, 300 and 130, -25F didn't fizz them a bit. Dad and I once started the 6 volt 300, unassisted by any means, at -40 in an open field. On the way to field in pickup, dad said, "I hope it doesn't start, one of us is going have to drive it home." Guess who got elected.

Hugh,

I respect you sir. You are an agrimagnet and I, just a novice. I know you are a Red man; for your own reason"s I"m sure.

I started out on a very small scale as compared to you with red and it just didn"t work.

Thanks for the gig. And as far as weather is concerned, I know the Nova Scotia weather has to be 10x worse than this mild stuff we are having here.

She might start but do you really want to without pre-warming? Your batterys and starter has just been stressed harder and will not last as long. The engine is running longer before the cold oil flows. The engine will have to burn fuel $$$ to warm up when electricity only costs $.

Well buick, you wouldn't believe the starting goodies; 2ea 950 cca OTR truck batteries; 00 cables with the longest being 15". Battery box right next to the starter. 15w-40 Rotella T with a little 5w-40 Rotella synthetic kicked in for this type of thing.

I'm ashmed to say it, but I only paid $4500 for this tractor from a "real farmer" who had IRS on his case and needed cash fast....course it LOOKED rough, which I corrected, but the guy had just gone completely thru it and what a gem. I love it.

Thanks for the jawin,

Mark

well it's 5° here right now and will be well below zero in the morning. My loader tractor is plugged in an snuggling. The WD Allis is up on the hill (no electricity there) and has never failed me yet no matter how cold. Last summer I was at Lebanon TN for the Red Power Roundup and everyone complained how hot is was, (maybe in the 90s?) I talked to a friend here at home opening day and he said his thermometer was standing on 114°. So don't tell me nothing about extreems. In Nebraska we take what comes.... and give thanks.

Impressive on the WD and cold weather. Assuming it's diesel cause that's the cold challenge as we both know. Speaks well of the founders of our country.

Got a neighbor from Newbraskie. Name's Ferrell. Goes up there every year to visit his kin and takes his shotgun with him to shoot at those things with green necks that stick up oudda de corn fields. Grin. Don't have none of dat down here; no Pheasants, nor grouse, nor California Quail. Used to have lots of Bob White Quail 25 years ago B4 the advent of the South American Fire Ant epidemic.

Well, it took about 30 seconds of grinding, a little throttle wiggling from min to max and back, and she leaped to life. No brag, just fact. She's a warmin up now for a pasture tour; that is, if I can see where I'm a goin. Grin. Came inside for a survival kit for the ride.

Buy Green.

Sorry to bore you guys with this trivia.....but to me the test of your stuff is how it does when it gets cold..... .well, I'm not in N. Dakota or Canada, so I'm probably a softie on this but cut me some slack. Grin. My nose and hands are still num; regardless of where I live.
