Is a JD 2010 hoss enough to handle a 1500 lb bale on a loader and another on a 3pt fork? Need 2020, 2520, 3010, etc? What would be the oldest, smallest, (cheapest) loader recommended for the job?

We use a 1954 Ford 600 to load and unroll 4x5 bales every day. But, we have dullies on its rear and we usually carry an extra bale on the rear when taking them to the field. Our front lift on this old tractor is the standard old Ford double hydralic cyclinder front lift with the bucket replaced by a hay spear. Dulies for rear tires on this old tractor made a super differenc in getting around both our Tennessee
hills and wet lands.he

I wouldn't use a light weight 48hp tractor for round bales. We have a Kubota 5030 with a loader, weights on front and back tires. You have to be extremely careful picking up round bales on the front. Even with a bale on the back. It will turn over or if you aren't careful the back wheels will come off the ground. We just got a M9000 used to pick up bales. Life isn't worth risking just trying to get by. It is an uneasy feeling when all the sound the back wheels come off the ground. Just my two cents.

If you get a 2010 with an old JD 2010 loader, the loader will not handle the job. On the old one I had, the lift cylinders had leather cup shaped washers which didn't hold up too well. Also, the hydraulic pump dosen't have enough pressure for heavy loads. In addition, I wouldn't reccommend a 2010 for other mechanical shortcomings and thats the voice of experience.

watch for a gas or propane 4010 if you want old and cheap. They make a heck of a loader tractor.

The 2520 I have with a 58 loader and spear on the end of the bucket will just barely handle 4x4 silage bales(aprox 1500lbs). The 15.5x38 tires are loaded but no extra iron. I do notice it puts a heck of strain on the front axle, I've already had one lug pop off and one ruined rim. Handling them with my 3020 with loaded tires and one set of weights with a modified 58 loader and quick tach bale spear handles them no sweat. Except for the time I hit a rut and broke the front axle in half.

Floyd;

Better go with a 4020 and make sure you get a good loader.

I agree, a 2010 might do it, but it won't do it for very long before something breaks. You need something in the same class as a 4010/4020.

Can't speak for the older loaders but the 2010 should be enough tractor to handle a couple of bales. I looked it up on tractordata and it's like 46 hp and 4800 pounds. That's actually a little more than my smaller tractor. I've got a JD 5105 with a 521 loader and move them all the time. Actually, being the only one close who has a loader, I get volunteered to load goose necks with rounds that my neighbors sell to others. If you get a loader for it, ballast those tires. When I added that loader on the 5105 the dealer did that to it and it handles great with a load on the front.
