JD400 steering

I have an older backhoe. The steering is very loose. In fact, I can turn the steering wheel 2/3 to 3/4 around before it moves the linkage.

I don't have a manual yet (just ordered), but I'm hoping there might be an adjustment in the steering box?

Anyone here have suggestions? Thanks

Thanks Tom!

It"s only +1 degree this morning, so I"ll probably not look at it this weekend, but I do appreciate the advice.

Are you familiar with the hydraulics on this unit? The hoe works great, but the loader shutters a little bit. I had heard that perhaps there are seperate hydraulics and that maybe the loader hydraulic fluid is low....any comments?

I just got this unit, so there is a lot about it I don"t know. I did just order a manual though.

Thanks again!

I hope you"re warmer than we are here in Michigan!!

No real adjustment in the "box". The valves are set with shims, that doesn"t change.

Usual looseness, from the top down, There is a pin through the piston, and a link, nicknamed the "dog bone". The dogbone hole becomes enlongated. This happens on either end. Replace the dogbone. to look in on the dogbone, remove the half-moon cover off the side of the housing by the clutch pedal. The lower end is pinned likewise to a shaft. The Shaft has a tapered & splined end, with an arm on it. This connection may be loose. otherwise look for usual loose tierod/draglink ends, loose bushings etc.

Correction: The half-moon cover is above the brake pedal, the arm and shaft splines are visible, if you remove the tin cover by the clutch pedal.
