A Massey Ferguson 97 I recently bought will start on 5 cylinders fairly easily but does not want to fire on the sixth (number 3 in from radiator)even when hot.Looks also as if the engine is burning a little to much fuel (smoke when idling). Valves are not stuck and injector has good spray pattern when connect up and operated outwith the cylinder. Is this likely to be worn bore or is there something else I should look for on these engines.

One thing about it being a Moline engine you won't have to tear all the parts off the engine. One head, block, pan and two rods and pistons to see if their is a problem in that area.

Right. There will soon be a worn bore if you are injecting deisel and it is not burning.
First swap the injector with another to determine whether it is the cylinder or the injector (assuming valve clearances are all OK).
Next, if miss moves with injector, rectify same, or if it is the cylinder find out why - gasket, valve(s) bad, rings. A compressed air test should indicate where compression is lost if that is the problem. Severe crankcase breathing will also be evident if all compression is going to the bottom end. Check valve lifts on the bad cylinder as a cam lobe may be shot.
Get back to us with your findings, so we can stop worrying about your problem or suggest the next move from wherever you are at.
