I guess this is more of a coffee shop question, but in looking forward to my summer plans/projects, I'm wondering just what paint I should use in repainting my late model SC and DC CASES. Both of these tractors, (esp. the DC) are pretty special to me, however I know they're just tractors. I would like to repaint both of them this summer. All along, I have planned on automotive base clear but am starting to rethink it due to the high cost. They aren't gonna be trailer queens but after going through all the prep work I don't want to cut too many corners either. All that said, what would the long term results be if I used implement paint and hardener from out local Fleet Farm. These tractors will be stored inside most of the time. What paint would you use? Thanks, Glenn FitzGerald

I used TSC paint on a new holland baler. Its kept in an open front shed, and now 4-5 years later it is pink. I didn't use hardener, so this might affect it, but i did a lot of work, took the pick-up off, sandblasted it, really did a nice job, and now have a pink baler. I did the same thing on a JD hay rake, now have a sea-foam blue and pale yellow rake. I used Martin senour synthetic enamel with hardener for the red on an oliver 77, and after 8 years it has held up ok, but there is some fading. I am planning on painting an Oliver 1655 in the future, its a work tractor, but its gonna have good quality paint on it, at the least acrylic enamel. With the amount of work it takes to do a quality paint job, I can't see how cutting corners on materials makes much sense.

Try IH paint. The new paint formula is better than farm store paint as it is acrylic modified alkalyd not just plain alkalyd. It is about $40/gallon and can be ordered in most of the Case shades. I saw the a dealers paint book one time, I was supprised at all the colors they had.

Just a few years ago I would have told you to stay clear away from the farm store paint unless you were repainting just so that the tractor would sell better. I am now changing my thinking on that. I have a couple of "yard ornaments" that I cleaned up and painted using the farm store paint and the paint is holding up quite well. Keep in mind that these ornaments have been outdoors continually since being repainted at least 6 years ago and there is minimal fading and no other deterioration. I would think if your tractors will be inside most of the time that the farm store paint should do just fine.
