We are collecting our used oil in a 300 gallon tank but I'm not sure whats the best way to get rid of it. Was thinking trying to find a recycler
but have had no luck. We used to burn the oil to heat the tractor shed years ago.
Thanks

I take all my used motor oil, antifreeze, hydraulic, etc, to any auto parts store like AutoZone etc. They have tanks to dump in in.

Alright, I'm no left-wing, tree-hugging, volvo-driving enviromental-nazi, but don't go pouring used oil, anti-freeze, or any other hazardous materials on the ground. Uranium comes from the earth, but I would be damn pi$$ed if they decided to start dumping uranium next door.

Need another reason? You give do-it-yourselfers a bad name. The EPA had already made it harder to buy good automotive paint due environmetal concerns. Callifornia tried to pass a law requiring all oil drain plugs to have a lock on them, so that do-it-yourselfers couldn't change their own oil, due to concerns about used oil and the environment. Don't give all of us a bad name.

Like someone said, you can check with your local county health department, or your state EPA office. Some states are better than others.

If you live in Illinois, you are in luck. The Illinois EPA has their stuff together, and has hazardous waste drop-offs all throughout the state all year. Check out>Link

They>Link also hold collections every weekend in Rockford and Naperville.

Bonus--they also have used tire collections, too. And they don't care how much you've got.

when we had dairy cattle, we used to throw a bunch of used oil on each load of manure and spread it back on the field, it also helped lube the spreader.

During the summer we use our old oil to oil the bailer chains. We have a vermeer baler and we oil it every morning when we are going out to bail. Also we take to o reillys or Auto Zone and they will take it for you.

I have had good luck finding people with waste oil heaters to take it off my hands. Check with any local repair shops.

Here in SE Michigan, I have several options. Many communities have recycling centers that take used oil. Also, Murray's Auto Parts and Tractor Supply Company both take it.

If you can't get someone to pick it up, then you may have to find a store that will take it. You may have to carry it in five gallons at a time, because most stores have a limit to how much they'll take.

Do a google search of used oil recyclers in your area , the shop I worked in was 200 miles south of Chicago and they drove that far to suck it up so look there is somebody that wants it and willing to travel .

I guess putting it on a gravel road is out of the question. It would sure keep down the dust.

I mean he!! it came from the ground didnt it.

I would try to find someone who has a waste oil furnace set up. A friend of mine has a waste oil fired boiler that heats his Auto shop and tire store. He burns all the oil his business generates and has a truck with a pump and a tank to go get oil from other businesses. He told me that he actually gets paid to haul off used engine oil from some businesses and has not bought any heating oil in the last 2 years, which is a tremendous savings for him. I bet there is someone in your area doing the same thing and I would try to find them by researching dealers of waste oil burners.

Personally, I live on a gravel road, and tend to dispose of my used motor oil as dust control in that road. I do it in small amounts, and no one says anything to me about it--I don't think it hurts a thing. But I wouldn't try to get away with spreading 300 gallons! That would be asking for trouble I don't want to deal with.... Good luck!

Hal,

Better watch about mixing that oil with dust..the greenies a few posts below insist that you inject it thousands of feet deep. Junk science and paranoia is the ruination of rural life. They are not satsified to rid Los Angeles and NYC of smog, they intend to save the world from itself. Crude oil, a naturally occuring substance, the byproduct of decomposed plant life millions of years old, is harmful to the environment that created it...especially if it contains the hydrocarbons of combustion....which is what oil is, a complex hydrocarbon...makes sense, huh? Yeah, just like the rest of the junk science they push. I am not saying you should dump an oil tanker full of crude in the ocean.....although Mother Nature can and will take care of that too....she has self contained natural oil seeps for a few hundred million years....but it does have a way of screwing up beaches and killing a few critters when it happens. Envirochondria is a neurosis sweeping the nation, tell a lie long enough and it becomes the truth. Now, allow the greenies space to scream..here it comes.

CNESLER, Check with any of the local "oil chainging joins" that are in most towns now. Most are picked up by used oil companies. They will pick it up for free usuaally. Most of the used oil around here go to fuel the cruse ships that you see advertised on TV and such. I an sure 300 gallons would be enough for them to send a truck out to you place to pick up.
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

We run ours on the barn cleaner chain. In the winter it keeps it from freezing solid outside on the slide, and in the summer when we run it only 1-3 times/week, it keeps it quite. You'd be amazed how much difference a little oil goes. A couple years ago I happened to get a 5 gallon pail w/ a valve in the cap, so I can adjust the flow of oil. It works great and it's just enough to coat the chain and not the manure.

Donovon, you are doing more than keeping the chain noise down. Years ago when we had dairy farms in NE IA we installed many Patz barn cleaners. The ones who oil save themselves money in the long run. We used to tap a 10 gallon milk can and add spigot and a few inches of soft copper so it would hold the oil in reserve. We always oiled manure spreaders, chopper boxes before storage, and even farrow crates. Dave NE IA

We have tanks at our garbage transfer station for motor oil. I have a 15 qt drain tank for my Powerstroke and a 7 qt drain tank for the rest of the "fleet" so I just take them to the tranfer station when I have load of trash to deliver.

I have an asphault/blacktop company pick mine up when the barrel starts to get full. They used to give a dime a gallon over 500 gal. but it takes me 2 yrs. to get that much nowdays so I don't know if they still do or not. If you have a SafetyClean in your area they did the same. They were a lot more picky on contaminants than the blacktop guys tho. I also know a guy that runs it thru his semi w/no attritubable problems at 5gal. in 100. A hunderd gal on a brush pile ? Must be a bigger pile than I have seen in a few yrs. Good luck. Fred

A hundred gallon on a big ole brush pile really helps and if it is a foggy mornin it is a great place to go and lift the pile with the loader and slide 10-20 ole tires in there.

Biggest problem with anti freeze in tire is that animals like to drink it and it kills them so if you get a leak in a tire filled with it you might find your dog or cat or what ever dead.

I bought a waste oil furnace for the shop right about the time everyone started recycling it. Now I have a hard time keeping enough oil to heat with. 5 gallons for 24 hours of heat with absolutely no smoke. And free.

Every place that sell motor oil has to take it. 300 gals is a lot to take in one shot but a couple at a time...in repair garages, Autozone and such. I take mine to my local mechanic, he burns it for heat. You could call your county and find out how they handle hazardous material.
This is for NY...your state may be different.

I know one fellow who dumped it in his diesel tank and burned it through his backhoe. I'm not suggesting anything, just saying I know a man who had done it for years with no ill effects. Don't ask what I do with mine, I'll just say the Greenies hate me.....you know anything that came out of the ground is poison if you put it back;).

A small quantity of oil, even used motor oil, will eventually be decomposed by naturally occurring bacteria, if it's in a place that it doesn't wash to surface water or sink to ground water in the decade or two that takes to happen.
To return it to where it came from, I don't think the more rational greenies (me, for instance) would object if you shipped it back to one of our crude suppliers and had it injected a few thousand feet underground.

So I guess you think of your way of disposal as recycling 'cause your just putting it back where it came from. By that thinking I'm guessing that you get rid of your manure by feeding it to your livestock.
