Just got my Operator's Manual for my JD 4230. In case you are unaware, that is a 1974 100 hp PTO tractor..... .like 30 years ago it was manufactured in the USA of all places!!!!! !!

Go to the lubricant's section and it says that above some real cold temps, use only 30w oil and multi-viscosities are not recommended. Pfaaaaa attttt ttt!!!!! !!!!!

Ala. 2005.

Go to your friendly JD dealer and he has 15w40 (and 30W) Hd-50 Oil and if you special order you can get synthetic 15w-40 cause they don't stock it; not cause it's junk, but because most people don't buy it cause it costs money!!!!!

But a lot of people don't associate the cost of premium oil vs engine rebuild expenses.

And if you read the labels, it says they are approved for all applications of JD equipment and other applications.

So for all your poo folks that follow what is in your 30-40-50 year old operators manual about oil selection; you get what you get.

Nuf said, and this was a wake up call for you, but why should I care????? ????

Mark

Thanks x,

Things here are/were dry dry dry. We are finally getting some needed moisture but I don't think we are going to make it for the hayin season. We are like 25" behind and April and May are supposed to be drier than normal, and you know what that means to trying to grow off a hay crop. Like last season, before the drought really got to rolling, my first cutting was ok, second was half the first and the 3rd, I didn't even bother.

Was at the sale Monday and all the pens were full of calves. Barn never had all the pens full before. Cattle trailers were thick in the parking lot.

Didn't stick around to see what they were bringing. I dumped first of January and was pleasantly surprised at the prevaling prices for as dry as it has been, like my 600-700 bulls brought $1 to $1.05 range, course they were slick and fat, but now it's getting really bad and people just have to dump their stock. I saw (what should have been) really pretty Brangus brood stock that was skin and bones. No telling what they brought.....not much, I'm sure.

Will be a yakin,

Mark

Just go to walmart and buy shell 15-40 synthetic rotella price is not bad for oil you can run a entire season before dumping.

Hey Leland,

Well the story went like this. Wanted to change my oil so I get on www and go to the JD site and check out their lubes. Seems that the Syn HD-50 is just what I needed. Had and still have no idea what it was to cost, but that doesn't matter now.

Get to the dealer and they had the filter but no syn. Hmmmmm . So I buy a 2.5 gal container of 15w-40 regular HD-50 and go to the local oil dealer to get some Syn..... had none of anybody's brand but could order it....I wanted it now!!!

So's "Off to see the Wizard"...er ah Wally World, and lo and behold there it sits in a bluish gray container, 5w-40 for $14 a gallon, no less. Said Syn, not Syn blend, so I guess it is the real thing..... and walla it's from Shell so I trust it; plus it has all the goodie ratings. So I relubed with 50-50 JD and Rotella.

Went out to crank the old girl yesterday, at 40 degrees, and for a tractor said to be a hard starter, she spun right up and lit off with no starting aids. I'm a happy camper.

So if you (anybody) ever wonders about why Wally is the world's #1 retailer; here's just another example.

Nice talkin again,

Mark

The best oil for a working tractor in above 32 temp is a 30W.

txgrn,
Don't tell me you're starting another oil controversy!I think you offended enough people from the last one by calling the posters "morons" when all they were doing was voicing their opinions.I think you know more about lubrication than most folk, but why not lead them in the right direction instead of name calling?By the way,did you ever find your oil engineer, or lubricologist ,or whatever you were trying to find?Maybe just tone it down a bit so as not to make any more enemies.Hope yur not pi$$ed at me.~brad

Hi Brad,

I should have apologized as I was totally ashamed of myself. I figured the best thing to do was to just leave. Sometimes you need to stay away from the keyboard and that happened to be one of those times.

Oil is a big deal for a lot of folks, witnessed by the amount of traffic on here concerning the subject. It is a big deal for me and I spend a lot of time fooling around with the subject. I won't bore you with the details, but I have a lot of various types of equipment and would really like to have only one oil on the place that I could use in everything.

Hence the pursuit, but it's futile. Like I just bought a new Dodge 1500 with a 4.7 engine. Got on the www and read an article about the design of the engine, and in it I picked up on the fact that the oil pump was specially designed to pump 5w-30; said to use nothing else; as does the owners manual. You know I'm not going to put that in my tractors.

Have had tons of discussions on here about "what the book says" about oils to use. These manuals were written when oil was in it's infancy. Times have changed, as has petroleum technology, and we as consumers need to be aware of that and act accordingly.

Now, is it any of my business what you use for oil? No. But I think this site is for us to attempt to help one another so I butt in to other people's business.

On the PhD in petroleum, I figured that if a person with registered knowledge of the subject got on here and set the record straight we'd all be wiser and folks would tend to accept what was said.

So, to answer your question, no I'm not starting another rowl.....but the Rotella Syn at Wally's is really worth checking out.... And for $14 a gallon?

Have a great day,

Mark

Hi txgrn,
I'm so glad you didn't take it the wrong way!I guess I could understand your frustration.I get a kick out of folks trying to find say... TYPE A transmission fluid for an older tractor or car.Better trans fluid has replaced TYPE A,but they're determined to find it somewhere, because their OWNER'S MANUAL says to use it. You seem like a fine gentleman, and I know alot of people were concerned when you didn't reply here for a while.I would be privileged and look forward to chatting with ya in the future.~brad
