A friend of mine has a 2020 rowcrop with wide front, good tires, and new paint he wants to sell. Here's the situation: It was restored, then overheated and the head was cracked. He replaced that, but broke something inside the rear end and now the pto is stuck in gear. The local JD dealer quoted $3500-$5000 to fix it correctly. He wants to sell it, but doesn't give a price. He wants me to make an offer. What is a fair price to offer him? I was thinking $3500. What do you guys think?

Uh, yhe 2020 ONLY came in utility form. A 2020 ROWCROP would be a 2510 or a 2520.

Decals say 2020 on them, and it has 38inch rear rubber. I have a 4020, and this look just like it, but a little smaller. Same rowcrop look to it. Is there a place to check the serial number to verify what it is exactly?

The 2020 series came with 3 different versions. The LU that was a verry low built tractor. The standard version that was the height of a N series Ford with 28" rear wheels. Then there was the HU or High Utility version with 36", not 38" wheels and all were called a utility tractor but the HU was the same height as a 1010 that was avaible with all the different type front axles but the 2020 was only avaible with the wide front. The 2020 HU compaired directly to the 3 cycilinder Ford 4100 and the RU to the 4000SU. I had 2 of the 4100 Fords and drove a 2020HU and there was no compairson the Fords were the better tractor

A beat up but running 2020 is well worth $3500 - $4500. Now,if it needs that much in repairs - it's not worth much except as a part's tractor. In regard to the PTO, 2020s come many different ways. It can have a two-stage dry clutch that runs the PTO, or it can have a hydraulic independent PTO. Also, it can have a non-live transmssion-driven PTO.

Not sure if it is the same, but on a 3020 Power Shift, there is a pin inside that breaks when stopping a high-inertia machine, like a silage blower----when you disengage pto at high engine rpm. Tractor needs to be split in one or two places to replace small dollar pin. PTO not shutting off on a PS is a worn out brake- could be warped brake assembly= split. PTO not stuck in gear- just doesn't shut off without the brake working. Does it turn slowly whenever the engine is running?.

I believe the damage would be the pin you described. It happend while running one of these cheap rotory cutters with no slip clutch on it. This tractor was way overworked after my friend bought it. He thought it could do as much or more as what I'd do with a 90hp tractor. I didn't even know he had it, and he cracked the head trying to pull 4-18's with it, fixed that and then took out the pto. It spins at full speed, with full power, anytime the tractor is running. It never spins slow.

4-18????? ? With a tractor two models too small? I used to pull 4-18 with the 4020! Your friend sounds like the guy I hired to fill silo after my kids graduated- plugged up the blower, took his sweet time to shut off the 4430, burned out the pto clutch, cost $1800 to fix. Would have been cheaper to unload 400 tons by myself.
