How much is too much

I am working on a relic that is hard to get parts for. It is a relatively slow running engine at 1200 max rpm. The tractor runs well but.. thought I'd check into it as that is just the curiosity thing I have. It looks to be the cylinders have been bored .050 over. That is OK. The cast pistons however are 4.25" stock. Of course the .050 pistons are nonexistant and the cost to bore and sleeve would excede the value of the tractor. It is a parade only machine and was running fine. I am tempted, but not convinced yet to just slap it back together. The tractor had obviously been this way for at least 30 years. I know it would gnaw on me forever though. What'd you do?

Sloroll,
Are there any modern pistons that would fit the pins, and close to right height over the pin?
Aluminium pistons woud probably not be too bad as far as balance is concerned at those rpms.

With a heavy knurl,should be able to add close to .030 to the piston..I'd get'em knurled and throw it back together..

Hi Slo, put it together and run it. If it were mine and I was not so lazy, I would open up the ring grooves to clean them up and get custom rings made to get the side clearance right. And maybe a heavy knurle on the pistons. It's the same old "nowhere to stop" syndrome, do you close your eyes and throw it together or empty your savings for something you don't need and won't use. How is your Allis coming? Bill

The old 20-35 has one more piston to give up and it will be mine. What a hunk of iron! How is yours coming along? I do love the old stuff but it is hevy and parts are a pain to find. Of course the hunt is a lot of the fun. I get to meet a lot of interesting people. Most are so friendly an helpful too. That is one reason i really enjoy this hobby.

My A-C is resting peacefully in the trash staging area, waiting it's turn. It is pretty good, a couple afternoons worth of heavy petting would have it running. I have an extra fuel tank but it may not be any better than yours. Bill

For myself, I'd put it back together, and enjoy it. Those old slow turning engines with 5 CI rings had a tolerance for wear and it will probably outlive us all.

Nope an Allis. The Cockshutt has it's own set of issues but much easier ones. It is a god running tractor too. I had some problems finding a headgasket and a good manifold but those items ( I believe) have been procured. I've never been around a tractor quite like it (the Cockshut, Hart Parr, Oliver) and always like a new and different project.

The important figures missing are how much cyl. bore wear/taper and the piston to cyl. clearance at the tightest spot ?

It sounds like you are saying it is a 4.25 std. bore bored .050 oversized running standard pistons ? This would be way too sloppy. What kinda engine is it ?

It is a continental S-10. There is minimal wear in the cylinder. I haven't figured taper and doubt if there is much. It doesn't look as though it has been run a lot since the bore. There is no real ring groove. There is no slap heard while it is runnning. Of course it is run with out a muffler.

Sloroll; I'm almost at idiot level on anything that isn't green and yellow, but I used to buy and sell used forklifts, and have seen some really old units equipped with a Continental engine, Possibly you could go that route for parts. If you want, I can dig up some numbers for you to call. Let me know if interested. DickD

For a quick check stick a feeler gauge at the bottom of the piston skirt opposite direction of where the pin goes through and see how much skirt clearance you have.

I've got a similar decision to make but I'm not into it as far yet as you are. The engine in my tractor has decent compression but blows blue smoke. It too will just be a parade tractor. It runs well, starts well, just has that darned blue smoke. Trying to decide whether to yank out the engine and pull it apart or not. Won't be too expensive nor am I in any kind of a hurry. My bet is that I will do what needs to be done.

Don"t know, how much slap is it gonna have? A worn out engine can be made to run pretty decent but it"s still worn out. There is always the old trick of knurling those piston skirts, and that would probably be good enough for a parade duty only engine.

I would think that knurling the pistons would get you by for tinkering purposes. I looked at a 620 JD last year that had the aluminum pistons knurled and it had a little piston slap until it warmed up good. The man claims it has run for 10 years like that and it didn't seem to have much blowby or oil smoke.
