Have any of you guys had any dealings with FSA regarding fence building under thier cost share ?Seems like a lot of hoops to jump thru to get a fence to hold cows. Seems like I would be better off doing it myself .Thought?

A friend had a dam wash out. Government said $4,000.00 and they would pay half. A guy had a dozer on his farm so when asked he said he thought he could do it for two. So why get the government involved. The dozer guy did it without even a hand shake. My friend was taken back when the dozer guy wanted only two hundred like he thought my friend understood from the begining and not the two thousand like my friend had taken it as. Like the saying goes--yesterday I couldn't even spell (government employee)---NOW I R ONE Dave NE IA

ref. nrcs the guy that does the so-called engineering in our county must have an eddice complex everthing he designs seems about 10 times bigger than it should be. I asked him to show me his calculations and manuals that showed how big it should be and he just stares at you and starts expalining how it should be and he went to school and blah blah balh this guy should be retrained preferably in the private sector if he could hold a job. h

If you'd like a $1000 project to become a $50,000 project, just let the government get involved. Several years ago, myself and a couple guys wanted to light an airport runway. Went to the government to see if they would like to help. They wanted to help in the worst way, they figured the project at about $90,000 as I recall, but with a 90/10 cost share. We went home shaking our heads about that $9000. By the next weekend we had bought used lights, new wire, made a wire plow out of a single shank subsoiler and 2 of us plowed the wire in, in one day. Another fella, came along and wired the lights for us the next day. All together, 3 of us did the whole job in 2 days and we spent less than $2000 for all the material. The government now refers to the lighting system as NONSTANDARD. LOL They sure can't say it's substandard though, we did a good job!

If you accept the King's shillings, you are beholden to play ball by the King's rules.

Currently I am working with the USDA,Natural Resources Conservation Service on a (WHIP) wildlife habitat improvement project that involves about 50% cost-sharing on building a pond (one acre+ water surface),interceding native grasses, fencing paddocks for rotational grazing and installing water lines and tanks for cattle. There have been a lot of hoops that I have had to jump through already, to gain their approval and construction has barely started. We have until 2010 to complete this. From what I have seen so far there are some things that I would rather do my way but I am willing to be flexible, play by their rules, to get the engineering and financial help from them. This I see as a long term project that may improve the value of the property beyond the price of money spent and it is earth friendly. I like the phrase; “It is all Holy Water.

When it comes right down to it your better off doing it your self. As Soon as you get the goverment involved your subjuect to all kinds of rules you have to comply with like where you put your fence in reation to wet areas, types of material used, and etc. Besides in the grand scheme of things fence isn't that expensive. Burning fuel and using steel to run machinery that feeds animals not on pasture is much more expensive.
