What do you guys use behind your tractors to cover up the tire tracks when pulling a grain drill?
This ground was chiseled in the fall and will be leveled with a field cultivator, then drilled with my JD 50...I will use the hydraulics of my tractor to raise the drill, so the 3 point wont work to lift "S" tines to dig up the tracks. ANy ideas?
I hate to see the depressions left by the tractor and the seed planted shallower or not at all.
Thanks!

We always put on new opener disks if needed behind tractor wheels and rotated others to outside or tops of ridges when planting on lister ridges and put more down pressure on the opener springs behind wheels and also ran new drag chains behind those openers. Never could tell any difference then after a few rains.

I don't know what kind of drill you have. My IH drill instructions say to set the openers a little deeper in the wheel tracks to ensure the seed is at the right depth. After the plants are up and a few rains have come the ground will level out.

You didn't mention the width of your rows or what you're drilling. Can you slide the wheels of your tractor on the axles so they're positioned in between the rows being planted? In other words, end up with a row on either side of the wheel track? I drill soybeans with a 3 pt mounted Great Plains drill and just plain don't worry about it. My seedbed is usually prepared the same as yours. I follow up with a pulvi-mulcher with the tines up (essentially a culti-packer) to preserve moisture and that tends to drive any exposed seeds into the ground but I've seen lots of soybeans germinate and grow just fine out of slots in the ground that were not closed!

I pull a set of tractor tire chains behind my drill. I lay them out lenghtwise across the back, then wire them to the drill frame. I pull them at a distance of about 5ft behind. I have pieces of angle iron bolted to each end of the drill frame to act as arms and stretch the chains out wider than the tires of the drill. No tracks left when done seeding.

You could pull a packer behind the drill.

I have used a track eraser made with s-tines when drilling soybeans. I had to build a 2 ft hitch extension to get the drill to clear the erasure. Some people mount teeth on the front of the drill and use a second cylinder to raise it.

If you ground is so mellow that the drill won't cover your tracks you need to work it down some.

JD 50

I used an old drill to seed with.It had no furrow openers or press wheels.I would go over the field with a springtooth just before seedng. I would attach chains at the rear of the drill to help cover seed and to smooth the field. Sometimes I would harrow the field after seeding.
Got more seat time that way.

Guess I never heard that issue raised. In our part of the country we use hoe drills that ridge the dirt between the planted furrows (for wind erosion and to protect the new plants from wind over the winter). The hoe do a good jobs of erasing the wheel tracks and yeah the planting depth in the wheel tracks may be a little shallower but no problem. The guys that do no-till with disc drills do the same.
