Should Antique Tractor & Engine shows pay to have (Special Interest) items displayed at their shows. I will probably open a large can of worms, I would like to hear other prospective ehibitors ideas. Reasons not to pay, 1.What are the fairly applied guidelines for show items. 2.It is unfair to ehibitors who don't get paid. 3.If one or two exhibitors get paid, what about the one or two hundred who don't get paid. The term 'paid' should be reimbersed for expenses. "Reason to Pay' 1. If show is individually owned and ran for personal profit. 2. with $2.50 gas and $70 per night motels, the show can not expect a long distance exhibitor to display without at least helping with his expenses. 3. If a 'not for profit' show can help itself break even financially, it could invest in a special interest ehibit with the idea it would help them break even financially. "My personal ideas" I have displayed my "GOLD_LEAF_DEERE" at about Fourty shows in the last five years. Three of the shows or a individual connected with the show have reimbursed me with a motel room or about 1/2 of the gas bill to display. One of the large shows offered me $2500 to bring the Gold tractor to their show, I declined because I figured it was to commercialized to suit me. O K, What is your ideas on Show For Pay

Now let me get this straight. You turned down $2500.00 to go to a show 'cause YOU thought it was too commercial. Now you want to get paid for shows you WANT to go to. I've seen your tractor and it's nice but to me would be like a 6 month old baby, cute but requires too much attention for what I'd enjoy about tractors. But as we say down South that's why they make chocolate and vanilla. I go to shows I want to go to and PAY my way as I expected to when I got into this HOBBY. I'd say if you want to charge people to drag it to their show go for it. Our club will have to skip your name unless you can juggle and park cars and pick up ice and a few other chores. You might as well do as you please it's ONLY life. Cheers, Don

never have and have decided not to, have put all oils in it and roll over the engine monthly., about 90 percent of the people who see it say not to start it, the other ten percent say "I wouldn't have the dam thing if I could not drive it.

If it was cleaned up inside there's a real good chance it will rust on the inside from not getting a coating of oil slung all over inside.

Setting around at shows appears to be the most cause of rust on my tractors from what I can see on the outside.

I thought I might open a can of worms, not a barrel of rattlesnakes. I am definetly not in the business of making money displaying any tractors, I have no way to write expenses off as a business expense. The Gold Deere has been to New York,Oklahoma, Florida and Michigan with out compensation, none was offered or expected. I do not and have never expected compensation, but in time to come with the high price of gas, shows will have help displayers with truckin. I don't mean local shows, but to shows where the owner has to drive approximately 200 or more miles from home. One of favorite shows will be April 15, 2006 at Golconda, Illinois, it is hosted by the local High School F A A class We will take the Gold Deere plus two more as rare Deeres.

OK, I know this isn"t a direct answer to your question but I will relate something that happened to me.
Last year, the local car show wanted to expand to include tractors so several members from the local tractor club agreed to go. The car club had 10 tractor trophies and there were 11 tractor exhibitors. I normally go to more shows than most other members of my club but I must admit, I was a bit insulted being the only tractor exhibtor without a trophy. Paying some to exhibit and not paying others would have the same result! Where do you draw the line?

You have listed most of the pro's and con's.
Myself the hurt feelings issue is very big..somepeople just dont understand (even if it is a very special exhibit).

My thinking is if the exhibit is not in any way like any of the other exhibits and it is interesting to the show.... then pay might be very fine. The shows that charge (or make you memebers) to show should wave that at lest for your GOLD DEERE no matter what..

What I am most concerned with in the paying an exhibit is what some places are trying to do to the Flea Market people--- raising the cost for flea market space every year and then giving away that same space to someoen--- it has run off more than one GOOD vender to some shows..

Howdy,

Well goodness, I'd be happy to just show my equipment for free at a show. They make us pay 10.00 just to exhibit at our show. God bless.

Being one of the larger shows in Illinois, I will say that we have put up gas money from time to time for special displays that are hauled a significant distance. However, we don't make a general practice of paying to bring exhibits or individual units the show. We will arrange transportation for local folks that don't have trucks and trailers that would like to bring tractors and equipment to the show.

Generally I would so no, lets not get into this whole idea of paying to have tractors there.
That being said I think yours maybe a special situation.
The GOLD_LEAF_DEERE is a one of a kind attraction.
I would go out of my way to come see it.
I am also sure any show your at has a bigger attendance.
= more gate receipts for the show.
= more vending items sold.
= more sales at the swap meet.

If that’s true and you can show that you have that kind of impact on the show. Then why should every one else profit at your expense?

Does any of the bigger shows ever have guest speakers that they pay?

I would say if they are soliciting you to go some where you would normaly not go. Why should you pay for it?

Kinda sounds like you are trying to find a way to make money with your tractor. Nothing wrong with that, but if you think you should be paid to bring it to a show, then pretty soon every body will want to be paid, and then the shows will have to jack up the price of admission to the spectators, exhibitors, and vendors alike, and that will spell the end of tractor shows as we know them.

Sounds like a great way to suck the fun out of an affordable family hobby. I personally would rather see an old H that some teenager and grandfather poured their time and tallent into even if the end result was somewhat of a mess, than pay for some proffessionally restored item. I tend to loose interest fast when items climb out of my price range anyway.

It's no different than car racing or tractor pulling. Hundreds of us go to the track every weekend, pay an entry fee and admission to run our stuff. IF we are lucky, we might win enough to make the night's expenses. We go because we want to. If a show invites you to bring your tractor and they are any distance away, they should be prepared to offer you at least "tow money". If you are going because YOU want to go, then no compensation should be expected.

Well, all our club shows are no admission charge so we do not have a large expence budget. I have no problem with helping guys get items onhand for the show and have helped with hauling items. If a man brought a special display from long distance I would not feel cheated if he was reimbursed for his expences and I was not.

I would not get into the middle of pay or no pay. That is not up to me. I will say that I go to a show to see EVERYTHING they have and have never gone, or not gone, becouse one special item was, or was not there.

I got to go with JMS on this one. While I dont show tractors, I do exhibit some of my art. I do have prints for sale, that is the 'objective' behind most art shows. Even cattle and horse shows, inspite of the hype are ultimately about selling product. I guess thats my take, the individual needs to find some way to turn expenses on what they are doing if thats their objective.

Mostly, I just write it off as recreation. Its one of those deals where I just thought my tractor habit was expensive, lol.

Lots of area shows have 'flea market' areas- usually a fee, manybe $10 per table- some are inside, others outside a building. We get paid for the space, they can sell products for their price. Years ago our club sold over 8000 dollar tickets for a JD A. Show, town daze, etc. usually charged a fee. Best day we sold 460 tickets.

I have to agree with JMS. I do not like the idea of paid exhibits at not for profit shows. Go show at Fairs if you want to make a buck . This hobby is for fun and the enjoyment of the participants and spectators. If you want to help cover your expences come up with something to sell at your display.

I'm not keen on paying any exhibitors, but since you have such an unusual display, how about considering finding a sponsor for your expenses? Tractor dealership, fuel/oil supplier?
