I have been having starting problems with my truck that has the 6.5 diesel. When I start the truck it often dies. When it does start successfully it will run with no problems. The truck will start perfectly between 3 or more hours after it has been running at operating temperature and then being shut off. Any time though between an hour to three hours after the truck has been off after running, it will either not start or it will die within a couple of seconds after being started. I have put a new lift pump in it, however it is still being contrary. What could be the problem with my truck?
I know this isn't a GM forum, but I know you guys know your stuff fairly well.

A failed electric lift pump, located more or less under the driver's left foot, in the frame rail, or the oil pressure switch that powers it can cause the same symptoms.

Bob,I've got a question as I replaced my lift pump on my 6.5 diesel yesterday. The old pump wouldn't run. If the oil pressure switch powers the lift pump how can the lift pun run with key switch on and engine off(no oil pressure)? Does one of the wires on lift pump ground at oil pressure switch? I don't have access to a tech. manual. In reply to start/die a mechanic told a faulty ign. switch could cause this problem also. Thanks,Tx Jim

Jim,

What year is your 6.5? (I believe there are dome differences over the years in the fuel pump's power circuit.)

Generally, the lift pump is powered during cranking, or when the oil pressure switch closes.

The oil pressure switch switches POWER to the pump, not the ground.

Some trucks have been modifed to bypass the oil pressure switch, so the pump runs all the time, and there's at least one outfit selling a harness and relay kit to power the pump, without the oil pressure switch having to carry the load.

Bob,it's one of the last 6.5's. With ign. on pump runs. I had been told that oil sending switch would stop pump. Thanks Jim

It sounds like you could have the infamous PMD failure. The PMD is the black box on the side of the injection pump that often gets hot because of where it is located on the motor, in the engine valley. Check out Link for outstanding 6.5TD troubleshooting, parts, and technical support. Just click "Contact" on the left-hand side of the page and ask your question and it will be answered within 24 hrs. I have used the site multiple times for parts and am completely satisfied. Hope that helps.
