Running a muffler backwards???

I bought a new muffler from the fine folks here
at YT to put on my Ford 3 cyl 2000 (horizontal exhaust). I asked for the oval one because that's what was there before.
Started putting it on and realized the inlet/outlet aren't the same.
The old inlet was centered in the oval and the outlet on the other end was off to one side of the oval. The new one is just the opposite. So it doesn't fit right. I'd have to bring the exhaust pipe to the muffler shop and have it rebent. So I hooked it up backwards and it fits perfectly. I started and ran the tractor for a while and everything seems ok. But I'm wondering if running it backwards will cause me some kind of headaches down the road. Thanks
Jerry

By the way, the new one sure is quieter.
I must be pretty dumb to have listened to the old old so long.
I keep thinking of the quote by the Dutch philosopher Spinoza: "A man't intelligence is inversely proportional to his tolerance to noise".

I've been running one backwards on my Case SC for probably ten years. The one I could get for nothing had different sizes on the inlet and outlet, and the outlet fit where the inlet belonged. Like you said, quiet is nice.
