TO-35 Coil Problems

Last winter my TO-35 ran fine before I put it away in storage. Now it won't start. I have replace plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery cables, and rerun all new electrical wiring. The starter and battery are working properly. What I have discovered is when the ignition key is turned to the "on" position, I get power to the ground terminal on the coil. I have replaced the coil, but I still get power to both sides of the coil. There is no spark leaving the coil. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Brian, with the Ignition ON and IFFFFF F the points and points and points wiring are good and assuming the distributor is getting a good ground, when the points are closed (as they usually are) you should read voltage on the coils high input (from switch NOT to distributor) terminal BUT THERE SHOULD BE NEAR ZERO VOLTS on its to distributor terminal, as the points should have that dead grounded.

THEREFORE If youre reading voltage on BOTH sides of the coil, the points arent closing or are bad or the distributor isnt getting a good ground.

If you place a test lamp on the coils to distributor terminal and crank the engine over the lamp should flash on (points open) and off (points closed).

Check the points to see if they are set right and fully closing and then check the wires from the coil to the distributor and from inside the distributor over to the points and make sure the pass through terminal is good and has continuity. The points MUST close which takes the coils low side to a good ground so it can conduct current and then when the points break open the coil will fire.

John,

Thanks for the input. Hopefully this weekend I will get another shot at trouble shooting it. Your suggestions will guide me through that. Thanks!!

Brian
