So I drive 65 miles to TSC; give the man a list that says I want to buy: 40 rods field fence, 70 line posts, 5 corner posts, 2 galvanized field gates, 3-point post hole digger and auger, and a 5 foot bush hog. Then I sez, "what kind of discount will you give me for driving all the way up here?" Sez him, "A great big smile!"

I don"t get it. Doesn"t anybody want to deal anymore?? :-(

the one here in sc is nice and new the customer service is great but tractor wise it stinks my area is around the horse track and the horse community so it is really horse based

I usually receive a discount card in the mail from TSC about once a month for 10% off or a $50 dollar discount for items over $500 dollars. It usually has a discount on lawn sprayers or nuts and bolts too. Last year I bought one of their 6 1/2 foot disks and got 10% off the $675 dollar price by using the card. $67 bucks was more than enough to pay for my gas. The disk is very nice and did a nice job on the garden and food plots I was planting. I also bought a lot of five gallon jugs of hydraulic oil and shell rotella T oil for our big tractors. Not to mention a lot of bags of fertilizer, nuts and bolts, and welding supplies and stuff to do painting. I bought lots of their implement enamel and hardner (very good quality) and a HVLP ingersol rand spray gun that works very nice. Not to mention a ton of stuff I bought for my 9n ford and my neighbors 8n that I did some work on. I bought several chains and links and steel strap, oil filters, trailer tires, grinding wheels, pipe fittings, bungee straps, tarps. Lots of stuff and I was glad it was there when I needed it. They don't have everything but lots of stuff I need. If I need serious parts I go to the dealer or central tractor salvage and I pay a lot for it. Most American companies operate on less than a 10% profit margin (profit). Japanese companies consider 1% acceptable as long as they are making quality and delivery and growing the business. A lot of times if you go to a store and an item is on sale for a cheap price it is being sold at cost to get you in the store to buy another item that may be more profitable for the store. I guess if you use the coupons you can do pretty good if you want to. Just don't use the Visa card because then another 10-15% will be tacked on the purchase with the interest you could end up paying. Later People

I'm glad I live so far from civilization. I have to shop two local Co-Ops for supplies. These stores are still making the local ranching community it's main customer base. Managers are always around to answer questions and most of the help has a farm background. There's a couple of good lumber yards that also know and attract the farm buisiness. Now if only a fleet farm would open in Winnipeg I'd have a big box store worth going to.

They have no competition. At least not where I live.

So where did you end up buying your stuff? If you still bought it at TSC, then you didn't have much of a choice, did you?

Yep, went ahead and bought everything. Beggers can't be choosers. If I ordered everything out offline, I'd paid more than that for freight.

I have a solution for everybody on this board that is constantly complaining about TSC on a regular basis. Get your money around and build yourself a nice well lit perfectly laid out farm supply store and stock it with all the oem parts for all the tractors that were ever made, just sell stuff made in the USA, make sure your prices are ridiculously low, and dicker them lower if somebody doesn't want to pay your price. Just get college graduates to work for you and pay them each $50,000 plus a 401k and blue cross insurance. Oh, and make sure they have a few years minimum experience on a dairy, cash crop, hog, chicken, and beef cattle farm, and a couple years of experience working on farm tractor engines and pickups. They should also know a lot about mig welders, feed, oils and lube, saddles, bolts, chain, paint, lawn and garden, pellet stoves, you name it. Now you would have a farm store that would make eveybody happy,.Now build them all over the USA and make a profit doing it. Simple right, or you could just feel lucky to have a tsc to go to in your town. When you really think about what it takes to get a successful business running the TSC store it not nearly as bad as everybody makes it out to be. I am glad to have one in our town and I go there quite a bit to get away from all the other chain stores that don't sell any farm stuff. We used to have a quality farm and fleet and they were no better, probably worse. Just feel lucky to have the TSC there people. It could not be there you know and then where would you go?

davpal is pretty close to the mark on this one. We all need to feel fortunate that there are companies willing to take the risk of building a store and stocking it with almost every conceivable item the consumer will ask for at a decent price. Then sit on that inventory until someone shows up to buy it, pay someone and provide benefits for that person(s) waiting for the customer to come into the store.

I'm in the retail feed business. I am constantly asked what a person has to do to get a discount. I am willing to give a discount on pallet quantities and higher margined items, but if all you are after is a couple bags of grain then you need to look elsewhere for cost savings.

We load unit trains with 4000 bushels per car and our loading cost per bushel is cents per bushel. I would imagine that when I sell a bushel of corn in a bag my cost to bag and handle that bag of grain is right at 50 cents per bag.

I guess my point is that margins are not what most consumers think they are. The only way you might get a discount is if you ask, but don't be offended if you are refused.

Hey, Davpal, that's exactly why I drove 65 miles to get to TSC. Only thing closer is a Walmart! I can get stuff at TSC I can't get any where else around here. I know the implements they sell aren't the heaviest duty in the world, but I'm not exactly "heavy duty" myself! I firmly believe you get what you pay for. My only gripe was, you walk in with a pre-set list totaling over $2,000, the guy could have at least paid for my gas!

I would be happy with just a cup of coffee.

I often go to Sears just to hang out in the tool department and many times asked the manager for a pot of coffee and a bench to sit on right in the middle of their tools. (just sit and dream)

Consider yourself lucky that for one- you were able to find an employee to help you, and two- that they actually had what you wanted! Our TSC is totally worthless and the junk they do have is overpriced. We recently got a Rural King in our area and they beat the heck out of TSC in price, quality and service. Now we can"t wait till TSC goes belly up so we can get a decent store in that building.

Your TSC has a building worth having? Our's looks like it is about to fall down. At least the Ford parts and horse supplies will keep the roof up.

Well not that it always works or I have ever done it purposely...

Try taken your teenage son with ya, leave him flurting with the gal at the checkout counter while you call the manager back to the serivce desk. Gather up all you want and hit the check out when the manager is still in back. A little luck and you might get the empolyee discount. If the checkout gal is a dude, its gonna take a lot of luck and your gonna owe the boy big time....

Well, our local farm supply store down here, the MFA, has about everything I could ever possibly need, good folks working there, and this little blond just-out-of-highschool gal working behind the counter and this old man don't care ifn she gives me dogfood when I came after fence staples. She remembers my name, and when she looks up at me with those eyes, I just melt down to a blithering idiot. Even more than normal. So see, it's all in your perspective. Harley
