I have a 87 GMC 7000 series truck that is running poorly. It had a 600CFM holley on it when i got it a year ago.It started running rough so i had the carb rebuilt the mechanic could never get it to run right the right idle screw or air what ever it is called would not effect the idle at all.I asked a Holley expert and he said the motor pulls so much vacumn it would not adjust and it needs more CFM's.I bought a brand new 3310 series 750 CFM vaccumn secondary carb and it still runs bad.Did this motor come with a Holley or a Quadrajet? The valves rattle pretty bad did they reccomend a higher octange gas for this motor?

What exactly do you mean it runs bad? Does it miss, not have any power, or just doesn't seem like it opens up like it should? One thing I would check is the the throttle linkage. Where the rod comes out of the fire wall(in the engine compartment) there is a plastic housing. If the housing is cracked, you can step on the gas all you want, but the truck just won't pull like it should. Instead of the rod turning, the plastic piece flexes. Also, with the engine off, have someone step on the gas pedel and hold it to the floor. While they are holding the pedel, take off the air cleaner and make sure the butterflies are open all the way.

I have 4 of these trucks at work 86-88"s. A 7000 series has a Holley carb that is OEM and it is nothing like aftermarket Holleys as it has a built in govenor plate. When I priced a replacement carb from Chevy it was close to 900 beans. For about 1200 beans I got a Throttle body fuel injection kit. It uses all GM parts and a custom wiring harness. It was a snap to install, the hardest part was welding in the bung for the oxygen sensor while lying under the truck. I have had this setup on one truck for about a year now and it is great. The company is Howell Engine Development. www.howell-efi.com HTH Jf

The Holley "expert" was about as full of BS as can be when he attributed the failure or ONE of the idle adjust screws to affect idle as being due to a carb with a cfm rating that is too small!!!

I would suspect the carburetor, but, since the problem apparently remained the same when the carburetor was changed, it points to other things.

You may have a cracked intake manifold, bad intake manifold gasket, burned valve, or even a flat camshaft that is affecting one cylinder. Or, even a vacuum leak in an accessory that connects to one side of the manifold.

Each 1/2 of the carburetor feeds 1 "plane" of the intake manifold, which feeds 1/2 of the cylinders, every other one in firing order.

If there is a leak or a bad valve, it will be impossible to set the idle on one side of the carb, and all 4 cylinders fed by that 1/2 will be affected.

Check the compression of all 8 cylinders, and also, connect up a vacuum gauge, to see if the vacuum is steady, but low, indicating a leak, or pulsates, indicating a burned valve or other valve trouble.

I have a '78 chevy with the 366. It has a Holley carb. Runs fine on low octane gas. It pulls really well with the timing advance so far she'll diesel.
I had the fuel pump go bad with that replaced the carb started flooding so I'm having it rebuilt. Hope I don't have the problem you are experiencing.

Here's my fall back plan.
When I take a grain load to the elevator they like to dump the whole truck--it's faster--which also dump the carb into the intake and you have to treat it like it's flooded to get started.
So the rebuild doesn't work I'm trying to do a throttle body injection which (given I can get it running) will solve both problems and probably produce more horsepower allowing the timing advanced to be reduced.

Check your rocker levers on the valves. They are bad about cracking and breaking.
