What one's the better tractor, a Case 430 Disel or Ford 4000 Gas? Both are loaderless. I have the two, and am going to be getting rid of one. Would be looking at bush hogging, snow blowing with one of them. Any thoughts? Paul

Paul, why don't you keep the one you like the best? I know this may not sound reasonable but I think it is..... ....

Bob,

It's probably going to come down to that, no matter what anyone says - wanted some different thoughts though. No point in driving a tractor I don't like. The Case I bought about 2 months about and have enjoyed it immensely. But, the Ford I have the loader arms for and just have to add the hyraulics and would have myself a loader tractor. So . . . it's still up in the air. Paul

The 3 cylinder Ford 4000 was one of the best tractors Ford ever cranked out. Torque galore. 4 cyliner version wasn't all that bad, but no match for the later model 3 banger.

430 Case was a good tractor, but certainly no match for either Ford IMHO. (Had a 430 years ago)

Is the 4000 a 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder? I think all 430s had either Live or Independent Pto. Does the 4000 have one or other? In spite of what some might say, that is imperative for running a snowblower.

Bob,

The Case 430 I own now, and it has something like a live but not quite. Case built them with a hand clutch/mid mount clutch, allowing you to pull up on it, stop the tractor, clean out the snow blower and continue on snowblowing. The 4000 I'm picking up in about 2 weeks, was a real good deal, and according to Tractor Data, has an independant clutch. Couldn't tell you whether it was a 3 or 4, but will keep what was said in mind. Thanks for the info Bob.

By independant Clutch I meant PTO. Is what I described the same as independant? Just thought of that, and didn't realize that's what it was called.

Your Case has Live Pto. That means you can stop and start the ground travel without interupting the PTO. A 4000 with IPTO would hve to be a 3 cylinder, 1965-1974. The 4 cylinder 4000s, 1963 & 64, were available with Live but not Independent. IPTO allows you to engage and disengage the PTO without interupting the ground travel as well as the other way around.
