I have to replace the cover gasket on my car rear end. I got an extra thick cork gasket, what sealant should I use? Blue RTV, Permetex #2, Permatex Hi- Temp RTV Gasket sealent, etc? I don't want this to leak. I am even thinking of using contact cement to glue the gasket to the cover. I am trying to find something that will work on all types of gaskets (If possible) for future use. I have tried different things over the years with mixed results. Thanks!!

Get a product called Hi Tack. Made by permatex. It comes either as a spray or a brush on can. It is a thin red goo that is REALLY sticky. Works great for holding gaskest in place and as a thin sealer. RTV is such a mess and too slick for most gasket work. Hi Tack is made just for the purpose.

Hi John, I pretty much agree with what Allan has told you, but I would like to add a couple extra things to that. First if you are using regular gear lube you should be ok with the black rtv though I prefer the gray stuff. I usually use the mopar gear lube rtv. If you are using a syn. lube you might want to use the axle rtv that mopar supplies. Some pans are stamped with a shoulder in the bolt hole and would require a gasket but otherwise I also would not use the gasket. I may sound like I'm pushing the mopar stuff but that is only because I like that each has specific uses and has never failed me. I have found the cost to not be that bad.

Hi John,

If you're going to use the cork, use it dry and only tighten the bolts to 18 inch pounds to assure that the gasket doesn't split.

However, the best stuff I've ever found is a 3/8" bead of black RTV sealer on the metal all by itself. Stay inside the boltholes with the bead.

Rattle it down and fill 'er up. I worked for years on commission and have done 'em by the trainloads.

Allan

I agree with Allan, but i like to wipe down the cover and housing after it has been cleaned and scraped with alcohol to remove any oil grease etc.
