It would appear that the 1952 Indy race with a cummins diesel was not just a fluke. Note that Diesels are winning races now...

Don't know about cars but did anyone see the episode of Trucks Sunday? Those guys souped up a '06 Ram cummins and got over 800 horsepower and 1200 ft/lbs of torque! Don't know how the tranny or rear end held up to that!

The have sanctioned drag races now with them.
NDDRA-National Diesel Drag Racing Association, kinda neat to watch them oil burners drag race with a 6" pipe blowing black smoke for a 1/4 mile

There was a guy way back when, while I was in High School, that ran a 1971 Mustang with a Diesel motor. He ran several dirt tracks in Nebraska and Kansas. Never really "tore up the track" but he did manage to win a couple "Bomber" class races.

VW had a car in the LeMans race last year but had to drop out due to clutch or gearbox failure. They figured they only had to keep up and the greater distance between pit stops would put them up near the front.
I have a VW TDI and can't understand why more people don't want this powertrain. Lotsa torque!
