I had the same problem before Christmas and cured it by doing 3 things installed and used adaware as mentioned earlier. Then and this is important I pulled the telephone line from the wall and replugged it in to get and good conection I know do this once a week. I also reinstalled Windows XP full instalation this fixed the situation.
The memory seemed to be full and no extra left for opperating.
Some of the programs needed to be reinstalled but the computer went back to normal opperation.
This is not very technical but it worked I had started looking for a new computer.

There are several articles covering this on the 'net, especially if you have a Dell computer. Bottom line-electrical problem on the motherboard. Here is a site with more info.

Go to Start>Run> Type in msgonfig>enter, Click Selective Start, and click the top left tab that says Startup.
Here you will find all the programs that are trying to run if you want them or not.
Delete all of them and restart. I bet you will not have the problem again.

Uncle,
I tried that "msgonfig". All it comes up with is "Cannot find make sure u typed the name correctly"
My computer has slowed a fair bit. Is there something else I can try?
Thanks

What exactly does this do? can you lose anything that is needed when you reboot? I have one that runs pretty slow as well and was thinking of reformatting but if this will work and I don'[t have to reformat I'll try it.

This will clear out the hidden programs that various webs will inbed onto your computer. Just run msgonfig and look at the programs that are in your start menu. I bet there is more there than you think.

If your computer is running slower the first thing I would look for is spyware. Various websites will load up your machine with small programs that report back to their owners about your internet surfing habits. As more and more of these tracking programs run they use more and more system resources, and slow your machine down.

A decent and free spyware program is Adaware. You can download it at the link below. The trick is to run it, delete the tracking cookies and tracking software, then run it again (and again) until your machine come up clean.

If you have Windows XP, Microslop has an OK free spyware program at Microsoft.com that you can download.
