I have helped replace a couple of broken cranks from people doing that before .

We did it a zillion times back in the 60's with a TO-20 Ferguson. We also cranked it a lot. We couldn't afford a new battery back then. Start it in third gear unless there is very little downhill grade and then use fourth gear. We could push it by hand on the level and start it. I still have the tractor now, but usually have a good battery. :o))

Should have no problem if you do like old said. Having a paved road is a huge advantage.

If the tractor is a diesel it wont start good by pop starting. BTDT. Years ago I tried to start my almost new tractor this way in cold weather and wound up heating cans of new oil and changing the oil at the bottom of the hill. Started fine then. (this was in cold weather) Turned out the factory battery was defective. Replaced battery, no more serious trouble starting. Another trick for cold weather starting: get an electric heat gun, use it to warm up air intake manifold, then have someone blow the hot air into the intake manifold while you crank the tractor. Don't use a propane torch for heating for obvious reasons.

You will not hurt a thing doing so unless you drop the clutch hard. Or in other words you need to let it out the same way you do when driveing it. The wear on the clutch will be the same as if you are driveing it around so it doesn't hurt the clutch
