I am seeing A lot of four wheel drive machines in my part of the country these days? Are you all seeing them as well? It kind of makes me think this is what I NEED as well. What is the deal with them? Do they REALLY provide that much more traction and stability? They sure seem to cost alot more. I can get a decent 4020 with diff locking MUCH cheaper than these off named 4 wheel drive tractors. I am wondering if they are REALLY worth it...

I know people commonly call front wheel assist tractors 4wd's but actually a 4wd is an articulator. Yes, front wheel assist tractors are beauties. I've used them while working on other peoples farms, I dream of one day trading in my 2wd loader tractor for a FWA. Diff lock has NOTHING on a FWA. Imagine being able to go darn near anywhere at almost any time, thats what FWA allows you to do. The 2wd loader tractor I got now has been stuck literally hundreds of times, I got a beauty of a loader, but with 2wd, it isn't worth much, now I have also used a similar sized FWA John Deere with a loader on it, it's as different as night and day. I want one!!!!!

we had a 3020 when i was a kid - no loader - ground feed with it - real muddy once - it had differential lock - it made it through some remarkable stuff - pulling a grinder full of pig feed.....

on the other hand - put 500 pounds of snow manure hay - anything in the loader and try to back up a hill - MFWD is GREAT..... I wouold hate to be without it.....

also did u notice how all field tractors that work in row crops anymore seem to be MFWD? I read somewhere that that style of tread doesn't seem to kill as much crop when u drive over it as does an implement tire....I even read where they started looking at same thing in alfalfa fields - the crops don't like the smooth tires
- I can't explain or validate it

The 2wd tractor here gets put away for the wet part of the fall, away for the snowy/icy part of winter, and the wet part of spring.

Would never go back to 2wd on a loader tractor, just makes getting the chores done so much easier.

Front wheel assist definately saves on fuel with less wheel slippage but for heavy work the 4WD are unbeatable. Alot of the time a used 4WD is cheaper than a front wheel assist.

I've got a 4 wheel JD...It's 30 hp but acts like it's 100. I engage 4 wheel when I need it. During winter snow plowing, it's on all time. Between the 4 wheel and the diff lock, I've gotten out of places that would trap any other tractor. The difference of 2 wheel to 4 wheel is just amazing. Will always have 4 wheel.

back when they first came out, I really thought they were a waste of money,but... after I bought my first one, I never bought anything else, now saying that, if your going to be doing hay or strickly cultivating two wheel drive would be your best choice.Just try one out and turn the FWA off and you'll see the difference.
good luck
Ron

Are you really that old?
They came out in about the 1910s!!
If you are not that old, you might think it is new, but it was all invented a long time ago. You just have an improved version.

No, I'm not that old even though I feal it! Let me rephrase it then> They became popular in the rice fields in the 60's. Sorry for not being completely correct. But I have had my share of experience with them as I farmed 3000 acres for over 30 years
sorry again
Ron

Dont own one but know a couple guys who own front wheel assist, and say they would never go back to 2 wheel drive. They love 'em, especially in wet ground. Not sure on how efficient they are on fuel though.

Jim in N M is correct. That being said I suppose that there are parts of the country where 2 wheel drive is satisfactory because of we didn't have them for years but it is a major advancement. If you live in snow and bad weather country you probably think now you can't get by without a 4 wheel drive truck but people did for many years, just not as well.....

Short answer is yes even on the smaller tractors. Pulling power is much improved. I had a Ford 1320 and it was amazingly stout with a little 20 horse diesel. Down side is those front tires wear out quickly cutting grass and whatnot.

i own two new holland 4x4 tractors and if your doing crops there is no need for 4x4 but if your doin bucket work such as hay where your going to use the bucket to pick up thousands of pounds, then i certainly suggest a 4x4 tractor.

You better believe it. Years ago I decided that any thing over 100 horse would be better off with 4 wheel drive. Worth the money? that depends on your use for it.

I believe if you ever went to 4-wheel drive you'd never go back, yes they do cost more(maybe as much as 4to5 K) I've had both many times and thats my take. Jim in N M

Wouldn't be with out one. Ever notice that a horse has four legs? FWA costs more (a lot more) but it is still FWA when you trade it or sell it. Kind of like a cab on a tractor. Having said that, you will notice I said I wouldn't be without ONE. There are still lots of jobs for 2WD as well.
