Call your local DMV - they should have a form that you can fill out. Used to be real easy to do but privacy laws being what they are you might have to do some explaining as to why you are looking for it.

Back in 1985 or so I was able to track down the owner of my 1969 442 convertible by taking VIN to DMV. I had been asking about the car for several years but junkyard owner wouldn't let it go because one of his employees wanted it. Roof finally rotted through one winter and I told him either sell it to me or crush it because it wasn't gonna last another summer with an open roof. He told me if I could find the title he would sell it to me. The owner was a Jr. and his dad still lived in NC so I was able to find the last owner in the Air Force based out of Cheyenne Mountain. He had given the car to his neighbor in exchange for a ride to the airport when he left. He happily signed the title over to me since I was gonna restore it. Junkyard owner kinda had to sell it to me because the title was in my name - but we had known each other for some time and it was a handshake deal. Not sure if that would fly today.

Good luck in your search.

Stock up at Krispy Kreme, then go ask your favorite law enforement officer to "run" the VIN for you.
