Anyone ever install an emergency stop switch with a lanyard on their tractor? I’m thinking like what’s used on snowmobiles, jet skis, and some boats. It’s a kill switch with a little rope lanyard on it. You hook the lanyard to your wrist, so if you fall off, the layard pulls the switch, and the engine stops.

I have a Farmall M, so the seat is kind of up-high compared to some other tractors. Additionally, the seat is on a spring, so you can get kind of bounced around.

Anyway, I just got to thinking about how this might be a nice safety feature. I’m really carful what I do on the tractor, but if I ever were to fall off, I’d want the tractor to stop, especially if I’m towing a mower or something.

I think I'd use a 'NO' magnetic switch.. just get one rated for the ignition coil current, and install it inline with the coil ( for a gasser ).. or inline with the fuel solenoid for a diesel ). And when the magnet pulls away from the sensor.. engine dies.

For magneto jobs, you would need a 'NC' switch, and attach inline between the magneto kill tab and ground.. perhaps alongside the 'normal' kill button that the tractor has. If the magnet is missing or pulled away.. no ignition..

Tractor pullers do this all the time. I think most clubs require this in their rules. The ones I have seen were simply the same breakaway switch that is used on trailers for the brakes.

Mornin',

I know of two local fellows that this has happened to in this area. One went under a disc and the other took a dive under a dirt mover. It is just a real nasty way to check out, that's for darned sure.

You could be on to something here; or maybe somehow put a contact switch in the seat like the riding lawn mowers have?
