I am currently in highschool and I am looking for a new pickup. One thing that I really want to try is a flat bed. Who makes the best flatbed for pickups? I need something that I can put a 5th wheel hitch in easily because I haul alot of cattle, hay, and of course, my tractors for tractor pulling. My brother has a 2003 Dodge Cummins with a 6 speed manual. He loves it on a trailor, so this is kind of what I am looking for. I would like to get either a Ford or Dodge or maybe a Cheverelet. It must be a deisel and a manual. What would you guys reccomend? Does anybody know of any good dealerships that would have some boxless pickups in northwest Iowa or surrounding areas? Thanks in advance for any of your help!!!

Why not take one of each out for a spin and see which you like best. You'll get a hundred different answers to your question around here. Personally, I always liked Ford trucks. Still do. I just don't like International/Navistar engines. I just like Cummins engines better. For me, with a diesel, it's Dodge... all the way. Your mileage may vary.....

Must be nice to be in Highschool and be able to afford a new truck. I'd opt for the Chevy, that may be a foreign designed engine but she sure does have some gorilla sized nuts. Only good thing about the Dodge is the Cummins engine. They may have finally solved their tranny problems but not sure. And I think for '07 they are dropping the 5.9L and putting in a 6.3L or 6.7L, not for sure what size but it was a 6.something and Cummins is not making the 5.9 anymore. Fords are alright I guess, just seems there are more GM's pulling trailers at the cattle auctions than anything.

Hey Deeretrax I was just wondering what part of northwest Iowa you're from...I'm from southeast South Dakota and go into your country quite a bit...I've also got a 2000 Dodge diesel but it has the automatic in it..but it still has more power than I'll ever need. I use it to haul cattle and it'll do over 80 right up and down hills on the Interstate with a full load of cattle, love that pickup. Had a 1994 Dodge diesel manual last year and that thing had just about as much power as my 2000, used it to haul more cattle and haul loads of hay that had over 17 round bales on it out of a swampy grassland and never had any trouble. About the flatbed well a lot of guys around here have them but I sure can't say what the best one would be, probably should just check out the ones you find and whatever is the heaviest duty go with it. There are some good ones out there like the ones that have the hydraulic round bale lift. Just my 2 cents worth, as they say...

Josh

The best flat bed out there is the one that you build your self , When i went from a pickup to a one ton 4X4 i looked at all that was offered and everyone of them in my opinion was overpriced cheap junk SO i took a tape massure and did some massuren of the truck as far as widht of outside of frame rails left 4 inches from the back of the cab and massured to the end of the frame and also to the center of the axel then to the outside of the tires then addeda couple inches past each side of the tires went home set up the drafting table put down a sheet of drafting paper and made up a scale and drew out just what i wanted then started figuren out the list of steel and i wanted a wood deck so things did not slide around figured out just how to inclose all lites and wires made the gooseneck hitch as part of the bed with a chain box in the gooseneck well and went to building got a lot of comments on how nice it turned out even got stopped by a state cop one nite so he could look it over and asked just where he could get one like it . the down side of my bed building is that it was built like a tank heavy but it sure made that oneton ride nice and realy helped on bad roads would i change anything if i do it again yep the next time i'll use all LED lites instead of the sealed truck lites in the ten years that i had the other truck i had one lite go out no salt eaten wires and after ten years the paint was just starten to flake off .
