If your 18HP yanmar is a YM1500 there is a hydraulic screen in the sump. It is behind a 3-bolt cover found beneath the left brake housing. These can usually be cleaned and reused.

I agree with what the family did was wrong. When my uncle past away, his family had an auction, but you would see them bidding around buying things that they wanted, bidding against other people the right way. So I'd assume there'd maybe be legal action for the widow, due to the decline in revenue or people gonig home because of the family.
