My friend has the above truck and has always had problems now and then with the computer. Really it's a ignition problem but the computer causes it. The truck will die just going down the road sometimes and you have to open the glove box and bang on the computer housing and it will start right up and go with no problems. Is there a place somewhere that could go through and fix this problem? Are new ones avalible? This truck has the 4.3L V6 engine. Thanks. Mike

My '85 does the same thing but it somehow runs out of fuel. Pour some gas down the carb several times & it'll run another 75-100 miles before dying again.

Dad's 84 K-10 with the 305 had a similar problem, it would run fine for a few months then not start. This was always solved with a new $45.00 ignition module in the distributor. The last time it pulled this expensive stunt I had the truck. So I pulled the computer controlled distributor out and put in an HEI set up off a 76' 350 engine.
Never had a problem after that. Last I saw it,
the computer plug was still dangling out of the firewall by the heater box in this truck.

Seeing he has the older 4.3 with a carb, it does have a computer, but all the computer really controls are some functions on the electronic carb, spark timing and a few other things. This truck could be made to run without the computer. If you could find a Vacuum advance HEI Distributor out of a GM 229 V6 (the Chevy 3.8 engine used in various rear wheel drive cars early to mid 80's) or find a very very rare 4.3 Vacuum advance HEI Id put it in there, and get rid of that electronic spark adavnce. You should be able to buy a new computer still, or used one should be easy to find. Good luck!

Chris.

Yes it is an 85. It would be more like a brain box. All of the ignition goes through it. It probably controls some other stuff but I don't know what. The carb has the electric choke on it but I don't think its connected to the box. It also has the warning lights in place of the gauges. Mike.

Are you sure it's a 1985 & not a '95?
