sounds stupid but check the gas cap=== if you take it to a good shop and they put on the scanner it will tell usually what is wrong

These electronics are like the little girl with the curl, right in the middle of her Forehead: when they run good, they run very very good, but when they're bad, they're horrid! The systems are all interconnected, and that light could mean anything from the loose gas cap to sensors out (and the code that sez "A" is bad might read that way 'cuz "B" is bad and is sending a poor/bad/no signal to "A", and unless the electronics person is very very good you wind up replacing A,B, and maybe C and D while they scratch their heads (at your expense!!).

Alex at the local garage checked the codes, O2 sensor, he said its pretty common problem, especially at 139k

he will replace it after he gets his furnace working, 2 degrees last night and no heat

Most likely emissions-related.

Most autozones have analyzers and will check your car for free. They checked My 96 taurus and I changed the sensor that was indicated. End of problem. I hope yours is that simple. You may have more than one code. They can reset computer or you can disconnect battery to reset it. I did mine sometimes overnight. Do the simplest things first. If you get the same code 2 0r 3 times, it will probably pay to change the indicated sensor. I believe mine was egr vacuum sensor located on back of engine. I have the 3.0 liter DOHC engine.

My sons 96 model had the same problem. It can be as simple as a loose gas cap or a vacume valve
on the manifold. You can have the light reset,it could even be a fluke. There's an aluminum valve bolted to the top of the engine (intake manifold) that has some vacume hoses hooked to it. That's what ended up being the problem, after spending $300 at two different garages.

I had that light come on once do to the fact my wife didnt get the gas cap tighten all the way. Went to the garage and they reset it and told me about the gas cap. That seemed very strange for a loose gas cap to do this.

I think thats like everyother check engine light. You have to plug in a tester to get a code to find out whats going on. On my truck after the problem is corrected you have to disconnect the batterys to reset the check engine light.
