Was tring to rebuild a hyd cylinder today and tore one of the seals, new kit an all. So any of you guys have any good tricks on how to get the power shaft in to the end piece of the cylinder with out messing up another seal. It has 2 seals one inner and one outer I ripped up the outer one but didn't hurt the inner one. So lets here so good tricks. I'll be ordering another kit tomorrow and don't want to mess up next time. Thanks. By the way this is on a 371 bobcat and its the bucket cylinder. Thanks

Hi Old,

All I do is soak the new seals in oil and use a ring compressor and it slips right in the bore without tearing the seals.

For the bore clean up, I made a extension rod from 1/2" rod for using a cylider hone. I just drilled and tapped a couple set screws to hold the hone shaft and chuck the other end into a 1/2" drill motor.

The seal I'm haveing problem with isn't one that a ring compressor will work on. Its the seals the the cylinder rod passes threw, the one at the very end of the cylinder cap. I have the rod in the freezer right now and will put the new seal and end cap in hot oil the next time I try, missed that one in the manual I hope it works this next time. cost $23 for each kit and I don't want to keep putting out $23 just to get it wrong.

I had one like that on a Ford loader a year ago... I think I took the die grinder to the end of the rod, and took the sharp edge off... Just chamfer the road a bit. Then I think I took the torch to the end cap and heated it some so the packing warmed up a bit. Boiling it in oil might be a better idea. Then I took the shaft of a screwdriver and rolled it around the packing, trying to expand it some, work it and seat it a bit more. That might help some.... however, I think in the end, I just relied on the chamfer on the rod, and drove it home. That rod is still tight, but it doesn't leak. I know what you mean about the kits too.... Mine was about 90 bucks. Don't want to ruin it. Good luck.

Just went through the same thing, after screwing up $50.00 worth of seals I took the cylinders to a hydraulics shop that had the proper tools.

Saved quite a bit by tearing the cylinders down, doing the clean up and buying the seals but without a proper size rod for the inside seals or a compressor for the outside seals no way were they going back together.

I work for a Case dealer, and I do several cyl's a week. Remove any burrs and rust and coat cyl and piston seals with chassis grease.Install straight in, big cyls like on backhoe require a helper to hit rod eye with a sledge to get it in the cyl.

for inside seals , use a rod the same size as the shaft and put it in backwards then push it out with the cyl. rod. for outside seals use a piston ring compressor or something like that.

Mongol has ya headed in the right direction as to deburring and smoothing the cylinder. I will sometimes use STP as a slickum (only thing I found it"s good for).

This is how I do it on case stuff.

Get a med grit emery flap wheel that goes on a 1/4" drill.

Before inserting rod through gland, dress (lightly bevel and debur) the end of the rod with the flap wheel.

Then before stuffing the piston in the tube, run the flap wheel around in the end of the tube to polish and remove any burrs.

If it's all dirty, and anyways, spray with wd40 or light solvent while burnishing, or deburring.

Then there has still been time where it took nearly a ram home with a tractor to get the thing started going back together.
