Recently, I purchased a Dell Computer which I really like. Even though it was a brand new laptop (Inspiron 6000),and Word software was installed at the factory, I couldn"t get Word to load.

So, I called Dell support the next day after receiving the laptop and spent almost 4 hours while they sent me from one person to the other. I spent most of the time on hold listening to awful music.

Twice during those hold times I lost connection with them and had to call back. The third time I lost the connection, I gave up. Life is too short to spend it with smoke coming out my ears. But I liked the computer in every other way.

Yesterday, I got a bill in the mail from them for $99. I spent another 4 hours on the phone with them..waiting while they passed me from person to person in order to get my problem resolved. Same story...phone disconnected several times...and I had to call back...only start all over. Third time I got disconnected, it was past my bedtime, so I just went to bed.

This morning I have tired the chat method of service. Didn"t work...Been on the computer from 8:30 am. Now it is 11:56am. Same thing...wait...wait...get cut off...or session times out. No Help at all.

I am not one to air problems...but I am sick and tired of being a member of Dell"s Preferred Account. Brand new computer that I paid cash for thirty seconds after I bought it...and doesn"t work right when it arrives...I call them...and get the run around....don"t get the problem resolved...and they send me a $99 bill...I don"t have the time to spend hours on the phone trying to resolve these issues.

Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

O-Yes...if I want to buy a computer...I can talk to someone in seconds...and they speak very good english. And I don"t get passed from person to person and hung up on! Go figure.

Ok...I feel better...but still owe $99!

Didn"t buy Dell because of all the bad I"ve heard about them. On my 2"nd Gateway system, this one less then a month old. The 1"st system lasted between 5 and 6 years with very little trouble. I bought from Best Buy and trust me when I say I will never make that mistake again. Long story made short, bought a lap top with new system (wasn"t Gateway) and within 10 days of purchase tried to return it to Best Buy because it was defective and ended up costing me a $103.00 to have it repaired and they WOULD NOT take it back because they said it wasn"t defective, but I had to pay to have it repaired. Told the wife, Ok they got me but never again.

Right on! I will never buy anything from BestBuy again. They got you nailed when you walk in the door. Dell, HP, and all the rest of the manufactures use these so called super retailers to sell thier products, not warrent them, and they have so many loop holes you will just be chasing your tail and wasting your time.

Fed up with the setup & sick and tired of dealing with those crooks. Got better things to do!

That"s all.

Find a neighbor kid who's computer literate, and, likely the kid will have you "up and running" in less than 5 minutes.

Also, buy a couple of books, such as "Windows XP for Dummies", and "Microsoft Word for Dummies", and read up on the operating system and software.

And, go to Microsoft.com, and learn to search the knowledge base and FAQ's there, since this is almost certainly a problem within the Microsoft operating system and the Microsoft Word program, not really with the Dell hardware.

I certainly don't claim to be a 'puter expert, but I've read up enough on the basics to build the last 6 or 8 computers for myself and the kids, load the software, and maintain them.

With tech service the way it is nowadays, you've just about got to know enough about your equipment and software to do your own troubleshooting.

Same lousy service I got from Dell, you can get hold of them instantly if you want to buy one,but if you have a tech question 4 hours on the phone.Sent it back, will never buy from them again.

Dell replaced the mother board in my Dell as a waranty job last summer after my computer got hit with a power surge. I don't think they were obligated to do that under the circumstances but they did it at my house with no problems. I was very pleased with the service.

I bought an Apple Powerbook two years ago and would recommend them to anyone. The only problem I have had with mine is that the battery is starting to play out and doesn't seem to last very long on a full charge anymore. One nice thing about Apples is that you don't have to worry about viruses infecting your computer.

Went through the same thing with our Dell. I didn't get a bill though. I had an extended service contract. My modem was bad they never could figure it out all they did was tell me stuff to do that screwed it up more. I finally borrowed another computer so I knew my phone lines and ISP were ok. Finally had to get nasty with them and email nasty letters and finally after awhile got one of those India's to authorize home service. Guy came to house in a few days and had it fixed in no time at all.Couldn't give him heck because he was an independant subcontractor. Dell is getting some stores set up maybe find one and go in and raise heck and see if you can get some help. GOOD LUCK !

Don't feel to bad. Before I bought a dell I talked to a lot of people and everyone talked about how trouble free there computers had been. So I decided to make a purchase. I bought a Inspiron 1000 almost a year ago and have had a few problems. Like you say when you are buying they talk and understand English very well. But when you have problems you speak to someone in a foriegn country. When I ordered mine I speced it online and called to order it. Being a laptop I knew that is was going to be moved alot so I was curious as how it would hold up as I am a college student. I asked the sales rep about warranty. I ordered the three year warranty and was told it covered both software and hardware problems as well as the computer. I had absolutely no problems at all with it until about 4 months ago. I had always thought the thing got excessivley hot but it was my first laptop so I didn't know any better. Well, one morning I opened it up and there was a dark spot in the upper left corner of my LCD. This wasn;t alarming or anything but I thought it was just lint or a shadow. Well the next morning I opened it and there was a ink blot on the whole left side of the LCD. So, I went to DELL's chat. I told them my name and my delima. I told the person that I was chatting with(they were in the phillipines, as I always ask when dealing with tech support of any large business) that I was sure the LCD was bad. They said they would send a box and send it to the depot to have it fixed. The box came and I sent it, thinking all was well, about a week later I get a phone call and they told them for it to be fixed it would be $300.00 plus shipping. I said it can't be it is under warranty. They said they would check and get back with me. They never called. I recieved my computer back in the box two weeks later saying they never recieved payment, so it was not fixed. I was furious, I called DELL and they said it was damaged by outside forces, and I questioned them to see if that meant superior beings or what and they couldn't tell me. I know for a fact the laptop wasn't dropped or ran over, but they will not fix it under warranty. I can buy a LCD but it costs close to over half of what a new laptop is. I will NEVER deal with DELL again. So for now I have a year old laptop that works great but you can't see what you are doing.

Don't get me wrong I had no trouble at all with the computer up until the LCD went bad. The rest of the computer was as trouble free as it gets. But there service leaves a lot to be desired especially when they tell you one thing and do not go through with it.

Send this message much the way you wrote it here to Customer support, CEO, and anybody, and everybody, you can think of. By letter, not phone, and not one letter but many letters.

My first computer was a Gateway with Millium in it. A worthless operating system. I was so flustrated with that thing that I told them if they didn"t do something, I was going to take it out to the shopping center where I bought it, and sell tickets for people to watch me drive my pickup truck over it. hey finally gave me some discs to fix it, which didn"t help much. So its not just Dell.

I bought an HP from Best Buy several years ago. They offered I believe 48 hour repair service. It needed repair shortly after about 6 months and after 3 weeks of promises I went to the store and give them 1 day before I appear in their store wearing a white tee shirt with see me about best buy service on its back. They came out that day.
