I have a TO-30 1950 that has allways had a charging problem. I installed a new generator and voltage reg last year but I still don't feel that it is charging properly. It is wired according to the manual. An Amp meter has been installed between the neg batt lead and the L on the volt reg. When running I have never seen any appreicable current flowing to the batt. Should I see a 5 or 10 amp charge if it is operating properly? Should the volt reg be adjusted or should it just work after you install a new one? I used to have old cars that when you replaced a volt reg you had to touch the batt terminal to the field or some such thing does this require something like that? When the tractor is running I can disconnect the positive ground and it dies. The belt is very loose, does it need to be fairly tight? Any suggestions would be appriacted.

Yes the belt should be fairly tight. The "touching" of the terminal you mentioned is known as "polarizing" the system. Try that and see what happens. Whenyou get it working, you should see a higher charge rate just after starting it, but then that should gradually decrease to a small value as it runs awhile.

Tighten belt, flash regulator to battery, Check with sensitive amp test gauge as normal run rate is only 5- amps without lamp load on some, tractor gauge may not move. Test at fast idle and half throttle, lights on and off. TO30 has Delco Gen/regulator? If same as IHC or early chevy may have adjustment in regulator to be set higher. New replacement regulators may not be adjustable. check switch, connectors. RN

I would get rid of the voltage regulator and put on a cut out they work alot better i have them on all my antique tractors saves the time and money of changing the REG.
