I"ve seen these in the A/C WD45D diesel engines and also in M/M diesels. What is their functipnand how do they work?

On the energy cell, Lanova was the man given credit for it, Buda was the first to use it and of course that is the brand of engine used in the WD-45 diesel. There is more machine work in a head with a precombustion chamber than a direct injection engine. A major advantage of the Lanova design was they took a lot of pressure off the crankshaft. If you study the developement of the diesel most of the people that used the precombustion chamber (Lanova) did not have one main bearing on each side of the connecting rod. The Lanova chamber helped make this possiable. All the major brands of farm tractors used a Lanova chamber except Ford & John Deere. IH got in the act with the 350 diesel which was a G model Continental engine. Questions?

Yes and no about the pressure. Average pressure is pretty close. The precombustion chamber reduces the pressure spike at the start of injection when the piston still hasn't reached TDC. Primary advantage is the precombustion chamber makes a place to install a glow plug. Quieter on cold startup and at idle too.

B&D, I think you missed a point there. Glow plugs HAD to be fitted to achieve combustion temps in a cold engine BECAUSE they used a precombustion chamber. Shifting near all the combustion air into the energy cell allowed too much adiabatic heat energy to be lost to the surroundings as it was shifted through the entry/exit duct.
Reason for the energy cell was the precise engineering (far in excess of casting ability) to obtain the high velocity swirl inside the combustion chamber to allow complete combustion without producing particulates.
You are right about noise, but for relatively high speed engines, because of the inherent heat loss at all temperatures (a larger surface area of metal and fairly intimate contact with the gas stream), the indirect injected engine will always be less efficient than a similar engine fitted for direct injection.

If like some 'Energy cell' was 'cylinder precombustion chamber' with glow plugs for cold starting. Less machine work on head casting, replaceablable/servicable unit that could be made precisly for assembly/field repairs, altered for fuel/working conditions. RN.

This system was used on many older diesels before they came with what they call direct injection.The early system was called the Lanova type and thats what your asking about.The energy cell was directly across from the injectors in the cylinder head.The injector shot high pressure stream of diesel fuel across to the energy cell where the heat of compression ignited the fuel and gave you the power stroke.Modern type injector sprays the fuel right in the top of the piston cup for ignition.
