It's a new program to identify and track animals. Not much info out there. My Wife's dad is all paranoid about it. He's worried that the Government is going to make him stick a micro chip into his chickens or force him to get rid of them all. Any of you heard much about it?

I'm one of the more mistrustful folks when it comes to government. I trust no one very much, and the govenrment least of all. With that said, I've been using the chips and tagging my cattle for years (since the second year the technology came out). I support the NAIA 100% for precisely the reason most oppose it. I'm a commercial producer, I raise cattle to make money, period. My neighbors with the hobby herds and the voodoo health practices scare me to death. Some of these livestock end up in the human food chain, and with them come potential off label drug residues, steaks with dark cutters, tough steaks, and poor genetics. This all contributes to the reputation of the auction markets where I sell. We dodged a huge bullet on CJD, we wont be so lucky when hoof and mouth gets here. With National ID and tracking maybe, just maybe, HMD can be contained and controlled, without decimating the entire animal agriculture industry in the US. As far as precident, the brucellosis eradication program in th 80's worked. It hurt individuals (me included, bad). I was down $200,000 of borrowed money for 2 years at one point because of it, but it saved the industry, and me as a part of it. As far as taxation, thats a state issue, as far as I know there are no national property taxes on anything else and Im dont see it happening to cattle anytime soon.

My animals are already National ID compliant and it didn't cost me a thing. ID only applies to livestock going through a sale facility or packing house. Farmer to farmer sales do not apply. Licensed cattle dealers must comply as well. Also the world will not end after national ID.

Just got my premise number this week, not thrilled about it all but I see the need. The latest deadline for implimentation Jan. 09. We'll see, I think itll take more time then that. And YES farmer to farmer sales ARE in the program. ANY livestock sold ANYWHERE well have to be tagged and recorded in starting in 09. It will be the sellers responsiblity to tag the animal and the buyers responsibilty to report the transfer.

from what i know of it, the NAIS is gonna 'sweet talk" every animal owner into believing that it is just for tracking disease outbreaks. what a bunch of bull. if you all believe anything them NAIS people say, then i got a bridge for sale and ocean front property in Neveda for ya. i believe it all about taxation of animals. once the NAIS knows what and where the animals are, they are goining to be tracked via GPS and then it will be easy for the animal cops to slap taxes on us. they will eventually be able to control ANY and all movement of animals and have the right to confiscate and/or slaughter any supected sick animals. even trading animals among neighbors and friends will be taboo. this is one subject that really raises my hackles. more government controls and intervention in our lives. it is NOT needed on any scale. and BTW, guess who is going to pay for all the paperwork and tagging for the animals.... right! we are, as usual. write your congressman NOW and ask more information as several states already have controls in place. after this, human tagging and tracking is next. don't play dead on this one. Write and call your local, state, and federal officials NOW. this was all slipped in real quietly and they ( NAIS) was hoping to get it in place before many folks know about it.

Although at first glance, the reg. seems reasonable and harmless enough, I do not support it. I fail to see how the reg. of animals throughout the country will stop a terrorist from spreading a disease and I sure wouldn't spend the energy infecting a small herd of cows in upper New Hampshire if I had a national target.

However, it will entail a substantial cost and effort by small scale producers as well as gov't expense.

I believe the real benefit of this will be the continued concentration of the Animal Industry into a few corporate hands.

In Wisconsin we have "Wisconsin Livestock Premises Registration". Which you must register all livestock every year. This went into effect this year and the reasoning (as I"m told)is for tracking disease. I don"t really believe this is their only reason, but what do I have to hide?

I assume your subject in on a national level?

I don't really have a problem with it, from what I read, it is just an update/standardization of what we currently have. As far as I am told - the small farmer who raises animals for HIS OWN USE and DOES NOT sell, there is NO manditory participation required. Nebraska also has a Premisis Signup Program (all states either do aor will). Just wanted to get some input on what you have heard. There are plenty of Conspiracy Theories going around!
