I am looking for any info about doing a tractor restore for a 4H prioject in my area. I am located on Lanark County just outside of Ottawa Ontario Canada.MY daughter joined 4H last year and just loved it. Some of her friends and other members showed some interest in this type of project when they were over at our house and saw the tractor that I was working on.I think Farmallkid did this type of project. I emailed him also. But would like to hear from others on this if you have ever done this before and have any info that I could use to help these kids.I have the shop, tools and knowledge.Just need some type of guide line to point me in the right direction. I think 4H is great for young kids , I know my daughter learned a lot of repsect for animals and people by being part of this group.I hope all the volunters in 4H Carry on the good work.Thank you Ron

My son restored (refurbished) a 1949 JD B for a "senior project" in high school, and also showed it in the county 4-H fair. He didn't have to do much inside the engine, but much repairs on the externals, radiator, exhaust, sheet metal, electrical, paint, upholstery, etc. Had many hours on it before it was done. Looks, runs beautifully now. One of your overriding decisions should be availibility of old tractor, availibility of repair parts. Probably best if you start with one that doesn't need complete engine rebuild - often beyond the skills of younger set, and they will want to see pretty fast results. Maybe a complete tear-down tractor should come up as a later project.

The local 4H group here in Southern Ontario restored an Allis Speed Patrol Grader. Shot me an email and I can send you the fellows name that was in charge of the project, great guy, I'm sure he would be happy to help you.

You need to teach the kids not only how to do the work correctly, but also teach them about the correct tools, and how to properly use those tools. There is a right and wrong way for even something as simple as a screwdriver.
Most important, teach them why the tractor needs to be worked on in the first place, why does the engine burn oil? Why does the oil leak out onto the ground? Why are the rims rusted out? And the list goes on.

Sure sounds like a great way to get kids off on the right foot though don't it Rusty. And besides that, when they're working on "their" tractor, they're not out raising he11 on the streets and getting into trouble. Go for it. Harley

Yep, and I think there are probably quite a few kids that would be more content working on an old tractor that to be out terrorizing the town. They just need someone who is willing to introduce them to a world they didn't even know existed.

Hey guys. I have been around and on machines for all my life Only 46 but long enough. I might even have picked up a bad habit or two in that time .I started in the farm equipment trade at 16 and worked for the International dealer for 8 years got my ticket for farm equipment and hydraulics and than on my own up until now. Born and raised on a farm. Ahave a couple of licence for my mechanical backround. But every day I learn something new. I just hope that maybe I can pass along something of value to these younger farmers. And learn a new thing or two myself. Safety first safety second still have all my fingers and toes so I can still count to twentyLOL.I have a few friends in the repir business that say they will come out help in their fields of expertise.Any ways thanks for the support and hopefully we can keep a couple of kids out of trouble at the same time. Not that that would ever happen out here in the country.Like I said earlier The 4H around this area is a great thing for the young kids of the farming comumity. Just would like to thank all of the volunters for that. Thanks Ron

Sounds like you definately have the background for this endeavour. I think we all learn something new every time we pick up a wrench, right now I am learning that magnetos can be a real puzzle, of course it doesn't help that I took it apart about two months ago. If I would just remember to bring the manual with me to the shop.
