I don't own a Deere, have driven an Allis d-14 & D-17 and liked them, but hasn't the market answered this question?

For one tractor over another, generally the condition of the individual tractor is more important i.e. an Allis in good shape beats a tired Deere. But, if you want to generalize, no comparison: Deere rules. Generally better built and fewer problems. Easier to get parts for. SOme of the Alices were pretty good, especially the gassers, Perkins diesels, but in general, I'd take a Deere over an alice.

i would go with allis chalmers because they cost less to buy and are cheeper to buy parts for. both are good brands but the allis will bet you more horsepower for your dollar than a comparable size John Deere will.

John Deere.

Reason: Far more Deeres than Allis around here. I've never run an Allis, whereas I've run a lot of Deeres, of all ages. Plus, I love the sound of the two-poppers.

Just my two cents Canadian.

Budget, hp and purpose make a big difference also. If you have a budget, Allis will be your best chioce hands down and they are just as reliable as a JD as long as they were maintained well like any other tractor's condition would rely on. If they haven't been abused, Allis is the best tractor hands down unless you want to spend over 10 grand on something around 50 horses. If you need more, the newer 7000 and 8000 series can be had for not much at all and are one of the best models out there. The powershifts were very reliable, esp by the time the 8000 series came around, and the motors are great also, much more fuel efficient than a deere motor (in all applications except maybe a 2 cyl deere, they may be a little easier on fuel, but more practical??? thats up to you to see). If you have 2 specific models that you are looking at on a lot, take them out and hitch em up to something and lugg them down. That is a great way to decide.
