My fathers 93 Suburban had the ABS brake lite come on and the ABS does not work now.
It pulls to one side.
I pulled the wheels off and found that the left caliper was tight on the brake rotor.
I am putting both new calipers and pads on the car on Friday.
The brake performance was also way down.
Stand on the brakes and it would stop but not lock up like it should even at slow speed.
My question is: Do you think that the ABS quit working because of the seizing brake caliper or is this just the start of a long list of things I am going to have to do to get the brakes up to par again?

Is your system a rear only ABS, because they shouldnt lock up when you stand on them if its 4 wheel ABS.My 98 was a full system.

OK frankiee,
First of all get the hydraulic end repaired. You're on the right track on replacing calipers, but the brake hoses could be collapsed also!Easy to check..... when rotor is hard to turn, loosen caliper bleed screw. If rotor turns easy, the hose is collapsed. If not,the caliper is seized.(don't forget to replace hoses in pairs)

When you get that fixed, check the ABS trouble-codes.Find the ALDL (assembly line diagnostic link)connector. It's directly under dash, and it has 12 cavities. With key on,take a jumper wire and place it between cavities A&H (as you're looking at it #6 & #8 left to right with outer center alignment tang at top) and count the flashes.Let me know what codes are there & I'll decipher them. Not brain surgery here so don't get flustered.~brad

When a brake problem is detected, the ABS computer shuts down the ENTIRE ABS system, until the problem is remedied, AND the ABS trouble codes are cleared from the computer.

You need to get the basic braking system properly repaired, and functioning, and then find out how to clear the ABS computer, or pay a shop with the correct scan tool to reset the ABS computer for you. At that point, if the basic braking system is sound, AND the ABS is functional, it will work properly, and no more trouble codes will be set.

The point is, when the ABS computer detects a fault, it will shut down ALL ABS operation, to prevent the chance of uncontrolled brake application, until the problem is remedied, AND the computer is cleared.

I agree with Ernie. However, the speed sensor could be munched due to bad wheel bearings. I'm just amazed...a 93 with ABS that worked recently? My 92 worked for 2 years and then whenever it felt like it after that. Never missed it.

Might be wrong but I think you can disable it and do some old fashioned breaking. Just don't overlook the bearings or other wear/damage.

Ifin it is like my 98 Silverado, it was because the speed sensor was corroded. One side could be cleaned the other had to be replaced. Bugger to get at, 4 wheel drive.
