Pretty bad around here and west. I'm 30 mi west of Ft Worth. We're afraid to drop a peice of steel on the ground, the sparks will start a fire. I had a fire get within 50 ft of my place. There is a ban on outdoor welding here. Had to breathe a lot of smoke in the past 4 weeks.

Joe(TX), I am about 10 miles south of Weatherford, near Tin Top. Where are you located. We had a bad one just South of us about half mile from the house. The wind took it on a narrow track and missed us, but the winds were so high that it jumped Highway 51 travelling to the East.

So far most of Missouri isn't doing to bad, but the do have a few red flag warnings out. If we don't get some rain soon it maybe a big problem soon. Both Harel and Jim are south west of me and here at the lake of the ozarks its very very dry and the fields look like they come go up in smoke in a heart beat.

730 virgil, So far we haven't had much trouble here. Either Thrusday or Friday some reports on the radio of some fires between Strafford and Northview along I 44. In the area Harley lives their is more brush and timber. The open land doesn't have a lot of vegation on it, if it has had cattle pasturing it. Harley lives about 30 miles Southeast of Springfield and I live about 15 miles Northwest. My Son-in-Law and Daughter flew to Las Cruces, NM Tuesday and back Thrusday. Joe said the only fires they saw were around San Antonio.

Is it practical to plow an area around your property? Or are the winds so high that it wouldn"t make a difference? Just thinking.
Anyway, our prayers are with you.

the biggest problem we have around here is some idiots are going around setting the blasted fires - don't matter if you have a fire break or not, they just go to the other side of it and let 'er rip....sure do feel sorry for those folks if they get caught in the act, that won't be pretty.....jail time.

A lot of ranchers do this and it helps to contain or at least slow the spread of the occassional fire set by a cigarette being thrown out the window etc. However, we have been experiencing high winds as well. For instance, the Sunday after Thanksgiving we had a bad fire pass West of Wichita Falls (northbound) that was started by downed power lines with winds in excess of 60 mph. Something like 18000 acres burned. Last Sunday we had a bad fire east of here that went through the small town of Ringgold, west of Nocona, and burned a lot of homes. Winds that day were about 40+ out of the west. With winds that high, that fire can jump 100 or more feet! Crosses major highways and everything...we are all on pins and needles around here...with really no rain in the foresable forecast!
