Bruce, You may be right that Mobil hasn't had the hydrocracked for 7 or 8 years yet. I would have to check. You are correct that Chevron was the first out with an acceptable (I say acceptable because of Conoco's earlier trials) heavy duty Group II. Mobil was one year behind them. I think part of Chevrons jump start was that they had the chairman seat on the API at the time, and knew what was coming down the road.

Obviously by our dialogue, I don't need to tell you the advantages of group II oils. Probably the main disadvantage is additive fall-out.

You probably know that most companies are marketing Group III oils as synthetic. Mobil and Amsoil use Group IV - there are probably others.

I just looked it up - Chevron acquired the motor oil division of Amoco in June of 1998. Later that year they had released/were in the process of releasing their Group IIs to meet that years CH-4 recommendation. Mobil met the timeline barely, and had done so by souping up their oil to scratch by. The following year, 1999, Mobil had redesigned their oil and followed Chevron's lead on Group IIs.

As far as Conoco's failed tests with Group IIs years before. I can't find that, will have to do some more digging.

Hi Jay, yes you are right about group III's being touted as synthetic. They do a great job in many applications versus an old formulation of some group I product, but when it gets down to nut crackin time, a PAO oil, (poly-alpha-olefin) that is derived from converting natural gas to a liquid, or methane gas, such as perhaps Mobils SHC series, those PAO's are going to outlast, and outperform the Group III's. I have had some experiences not to my liking with Chevrons Hiper-Syn oils, they are not PAO's.

Yep, there sure is Logan. For me it was refreshing to actually carry on a conversation about oil with someone that knew what they are talking about. Many say, I've used this snake oil for years and haven't had any problem. I always contend that that doesn't mean its the right thing to do or that it isn't causing down the road problems.

I get so disgusted with some of these discussions I tend to stay out of them. Facts and OEM recommendations don't seem to matter to some. Politics is easier to discuss, lol.

Petro-Canada on Southdown Road in Mississauga still uses the Hydrocracker and the Hydrobon. Makes a clear base stock and high octane unleaded.
