Has any body ever tried to put an Oliver 60 engine in to a cletrac HG crawler?? If so what probelms did you run in to and how did you get around them?? I know its the wrong engine for the HG but it had the wrong engine in it when I got it and I haven't found a starter that would work. So I found this 60 engine that was rebuilt not long ago and it purrs like a kitten so I figured I'd put it in. Thanks

old: The Oliver guys seem very much like Government bureauacrats, they only deal with regulars. I have a real hankering to own a Super 77 diesel. The closest I ever came to a S-77 diesel was back in 1955, I tried to talk my dad into buying one instead of Farmall 300. I've never really got that out of my system. I asked a few questions a couple of years back, over at the Oliver board. They ignored me like I had the plague. I still don't have the 77, but I'm willing to bet, had they welcomed me into the flock, a Super 77 diesel would be parked in my shed by now.

You just think about it, you, I and other long time Farmall users at YT have talked many a non Farmall user into becomming a Farmall believer. That's what makes this Farmall board so great, we welcome all that have led a sheltered life.

Heck Hugh, I posted a message on the Oliver board wanting some info on Super 77D I was looking at. Got one response right away. BUT was from our friend OLD, and was the only response I recieved.

Since Shawn got his SC, I spend more time on the Farmall forum than any of the rest. That is besides this one.

OlD has to stick around as we can find him on most of the forums....

Keith: I guess old must have been visiting other forums the day I went Oliver. I've always been interested in all tractors. Farmed all my life, and in my opinion, I've yet to see the perfect tractor. All the dozen or so mainline manufacturers of the 1960s had at least one feature I liked. I would have thought by now, in 2006, John Deere would have built the perfect tractor, but they have gone done hill in the past 10 years. I wound up being an IH man as the result of an excellent dealer. Plain and simple the parts guy and his supply has always been number one.

You may ask why I say John Deere should have built the perfect by now. Well John Deere never had any first ideas of ther own. They've just done a fine job of marketing the ideas of others. Ideas like Oliver's 6 cylinder, Cockshutt's IPTO, Ford's Select-0-speed, IH's TA, Ferguson's 3 point, Versatile's articulated, etc. I'm sure I've missed a few. I thought at one time I'd live to see the perfect tractor. I'm starting to loose that hope.

As far as the boards I have found they all run in sperts one day you get to many answers then the next day no answers. My self I own more Olivers then I do farmalls, shoot I own more fords then farmalls. Just one of those things I guess.

Old, do you have the any info on the Continental engine starter? I was looking at a continental engine last week at that ranch where my Oliver is.

I will pull it off and see what numbers are on it. If it will work for you, I'll ship it your way.

Thats part of the problem since it was sitting hwere a hercules engine should have been theres few if any starter that would fit. I have one I payed $125 for and then had to have it rebuilt, another $50 and it spins back wards so that was a waste of $$. Oh well thats why I'm doing the 60 engine, plus the contenetal engine was weak and would just pull the crawler. Thanks any how

If all you really need is the starter to turn the right direction and you have everything else, you can just reverse the direction of rotation on the starter, don"t know what would be the easy way to do it, either reverse the armature leads or the field leads and you should be set to go..

Pre-engaged are simple enough, but a bendix type will throw the pinion in the wrong direction if you reverse the rotation.

Kevin: Here is what I encountered with a starter turning the wrong way. I went to an Auto Electric Rebuilder with the non working starter from my 1066 Farmall. He advised if I waited he could fix in about 20 min. About the same time a friend I hadn't seen in awhile came in, we got into conversation while the rebuilder did his thing.

I left with my rebuilt starter about 30 min later. Went home and installed it. Turned the engine, but not well though. I watched while someone else pushed the starter button. It was trying to turn the 1066 engine backwards. Back to the rebuilder I go. He knew I also had a 466 in a truck, and had thought I had the truck starter. They are the same starter. The difference 1066 starter lies behind flywheel and truck starter lies ahead of flywheel along side engine. They turn opposite directions. The armature is different. He had installed the wrong armature, he also had to change it. The two applications use a completely different armature.

I don't know if this is always the case but it is with the starter I mentioned.
