I've been looking for a smaller utility type tractor with a front end loader for a while now with little success. They just don't seem to have any in my neck of the woods.

In the Thrifty Nickel there is a "Heavy Duty" loader for sale for $600 this week. There is also a Ford 641 for sale for $2,850. I'm thinking I might try to match the 2 up and end up with my utility loader tractor.

Called the guy with the loader and he has no idea what brand it is or even what it came off of. It was part of a trade and he hasn't ever used it. It has the control valves and it's own hydraulic pump but he said the hoses would probably all need replaced. He said the cylinders have been closed so he really didn't know what kind of shape they were in but thought they were fine. He said the pump was not a PTO style pump but simply had a shaft that would be hooked up to the front of the tractor?

He measured it and said it was 24" wide at the front and 32" wide at the back.

I'm clueless here but even was wondering if that would fit on my Farmall M?

What do I need to know to figure this out?

Thanks, Nathan

Nathan,

Hard to tell over the phone, but that sounds like one of those little "American" brand jobbies fer the little Fords.

If so, your M would have that thing tuned into a pretzel inside a week.

Just my opinion,

Allan

You would have to go check out the loader and get a make and model off the serial tag, then contact a dealer that sells that brand or possibly the manufacturer and find out what it was designed for. I'll bet it is made to only fit a certain model tractor unless it's the kind that have side plates, then you just cut the bolt holes in a different spot for different tractors. but I doubt it because this loader wouldn't be a quick tach with the pump in the front. I'd suggest just looking for a used loader tractor, you can get a small one for less than $3,000 if you keep watch and go to auctions.

I have to disagree with most of the others. Its very very common to have a forunt mount pump on a loader. Shoot I have 4 or 5 tractors with loaders and front mounted pumps. Front mounted pump work faster then loaders that run off the tractor hyd systems. I have seen them on fords and MF a lot but have also seen them on olivers etc.

If the pump is designed for front installation my best guess would be that this loader would not fit an M. Most likely this loader is meant for an industrial type of tractor, although I have seen 8n fords set up with a front mounted hydraulic pump.

Well the loader was obviously made for a tractor that didn't have live hydraulics, because it has it's own pump. Not that you would have to use it that way. Measure the width of your tractor in the area where the loader would attach. Now go look at the loader. Try and line up the loader mounts to the loader so you can figure out what width is left in the middle for tractor. If it looks like there is enough room between the mounts for your tractor to fit into, look at how the loader frame attaches to the tractor. Figure you might have to add a plate or two to the loader frame and drill a few holes that would line up with holes in the frame of your tractor. Most loaders can be made to hundreds of different tractors without too much work. Remember you don't know the condition of the cylinders and you do know you will need to buy new hoses. That said, I don't think $600 is a steal, but it may be a fair deal depending on the overall condition.

I'm with Old on this one simply because the loader has it's own pump doesn't mean the tractor didn't have live hydraullics. My Oliver 55 has live hydraullics but the DuAll loader has it's own pump as does my friends Ford 850 with a Wagner and it's own pump. I think they did it back then because the tractors resevoirs were inadequate for running a loader and a three point at a decent speed.

That's a tough one. There might be a manufacturer's serial number/data plate on it. It might be all painted over, but some paint remover might make it readable. Other than that, it would take an on site inspection of both items by someone really handy in fabricating and mechanics to tell if it can be made to fit reasonable economically. If it were me, I'd just keep my eye out for a suitable sized tractor with loader, unless I was really handy and could do the conversion myself.
