Hey,
There's an argument on the radio today on "the David Lee Roth", someone claims he used to drive an old John Deere tractor when he was 12 and it used to go up to 65 mph.
Could this be?
Please reply or post an article

Thanks

A older guy in town had a wd45 with a 440 in it and he would get in trouble for passing cars with it on hi way .

John Deere, I doubt that one would do over 25 with a after market road gear and the govenor pulled back. I have read about the Simpson Jumbo tractor used for oval track racing that could hit around 80 mph. I dont doubt it a bit do to the fact that I have a 1950 Custom tractor with a in line 8 cyl Chrysler flat head motor that will flat get with the program. I never had it above 45 to 50 mph only because that is fast enough for me. If I was to guess it would run around 60 + mph at 4000 rpm. The awesome thing about it is it will do this in a drag race with a track length of 200 feet long. The only problems I have is shifting the New Process transmission corectly to do this. One of our games we do at the tractor rodeo is a drag race. We run one tractor at a time. Fastes time wins.

No Way! Hornets can't go that fast.

And everybody knows that a tractor can't out run a swarm of angry hornets.

The styled A and B would do 14-15 (6 speed hi/lo) The single stick A and B about 10-11 mph. The H Farmall was 1-2 mph faster at 15-16 as I recall.

Sent my wife to rake a field about 3 miles away on a JD H back in the 70's- it went about 3 or 4 mph, flat out- when she returned (temperature pushing 100 that day), she advised that she wouldn't be driving that one on the road anymore- it was bad enough working in the field all day, without taking forever just to get there. Hard to imagine any of them going over 15 mph.

There were, and are, some orchard tractors that would get down the road at about that speed if you were foolish enough to attempt it, and I think maybe there were one or two row-crop tractors that could travel at a dangerous speed also, but none of the John Deere tractors that I am familiar with could manage much more than about 10 or maybe 12 mph, and quite a few earlier models couldn't even manage that. Even when you get up into the 3020 and 4020 models the max speed still wasn't much more than about 15 to 20?

The 460 gasser that i had way back would flat up and get with the progrham with the govener removed . When we use to go play let pull the sled i would remove the govener and it would run at over 6500 RPM well one day we hauled someother guys tractor down to the pull and put his on the trailer first not thinking that we would be unloading his first at his place and it was only a couple miles from the shop well after we unloaded his i told my buddy that i would just drive the 460 to the shop well he took off with the pick up and trailer and i took off well since i don't have all my duck in a row i opened the 460 up and was wright on the back end of the trailer and mikey told me that we were running almost 65 felt like 200 on the tractor and there was the Oliver 88 that had a 67 ford 390 Gt engine in it with 4bbl carb and it would run 65 no problem pullen two wagon loads of corn just ask the state cop that stopped me and informed me that 25 mph was the max that one can run on the highway with and SMV sign .

What the 460 other then the carb and the dist. she was bone stock , and there was two other guys that had ran that tractor at the pulls and will back up the story and as for the oliver 88 she was not the only one that was in this area as there were and are still a bunch of V 8's around here in just about any kind of tractor . THE Haley boy made up a bunch of V 8 powered tractors and as far as the nicest one it had to be the 706 with a 549 I H truck motor that they farmed with . And one thing about me i tell it like it is . Now if you doubt me go get your self and old 460 gasser and remove the govener and hook up the throttel direct add and 806 carb and all i can tellya is hang on and MAKE SURE THAT THE ROAD IS STRIGHT. OH put and electroinc tach on her and see just how far it will go . The 390 we had it so that it would not go over 6000.

That I would like to see, I've never heard of a JD that would go that fast. I have heard of a few other brands that would but so far never heard of a JD that would.

Even loaded on a truck, in those days it would be hard to find a truck that could do an honest 65MPH. There was some thing about an Allis WC on rubber seting a speed record to prove rubber tires. Bet some one knows about that.

Look up Ab Jenkins. He beat Oldfield's speed with an Allis. I believe there was some fair grounds racing in the South using 9N Fords.

Barney Oldfield drove a model "U" at Indy and several county fair demonstration races. The WC would not have been suitable, because of the final drive gears. I suspect that the 'U' was easier to modify.

I think it was Barney Oldfield that drove the WC, on the track at INDY, and I think the tire company was Goodyear? Don't remember the exact speed that was achieved but I am certain that the 'ol WC was modified.

Just did a google search.
"The Allis-Chalmers WC was released in 1933 equipped with either rubber tires or steel wheels. To promote the rubber tires, Barney Oldfield, a famous race-car driver, was engaged to take a tractor with special high-speed gears and rubber tires on a barnstorming tour, during which he set a world tractor speed record of 64 miles per hour." Have driven a few tractors...old M&M "Z" at about 18 MPH, was too fast. Best was Case LA at about 12 for pulling implements down the road. No way would you get me over 20 MPH on a tractor with the steering they had those days.

Thats true. I was raking with the allis 1953 WD-45 one day and i was hitting about 12. I admit it was challenging to keep control of.
