Have a 2003 4 wheel drive Suburban, we get 17 to 19. Averaged 17.5 last weekend but had a lot of head wind.

Thanks for all the input guys.I checked the GM website and got the same as what allen said 17 to 19. But it sounds like its a little less in real life. Thanks again for your help. The piston slap doesn't sound to promising. Thanks again Ron

Ron, you will not have to worry about the piston slap if you will try ehat I recommended in my earlier post.
"Had a Vortec. If you will change the oil to Mobil One 10W30 and a good filter, then change in 3000 miles, by the second change ALL piston slap will be gone. Been there done that.
Secret is the Mobil and changes at 3000 miles.
Tom"

I agree with the mileage that the others are getting. I have a 2000 Silverado EXT 4 X 4. The very best mileage I have seen was right at 16. That was one time. I average 13.5 to 15. When pulling a 5 to 6K load, I get 9 to 10 mpg at interstate speeds. I have found that at 66 to 67 mph, the transmission won't search like it does at higher speeds when pulling that heavy of a load. You can set your cruise there and not worry about the constant downshifting, unless, of course, there are some steep hills.

I had one in a 99 GMC LT ext. cab 4X4 pickup. It got about 14.5 mpg consistently day to day, around town. This was regular driving, I didn"t baby it but I didn"t dog it either. When towing a JD B or two it got 9 or 10 mpg. I had a good experience with mine. I finally traded it for a 2500HD w/Duramax in 2004.

14.8 combined city and highway driving. No appreciable piston slap (I do let it warm for 3-4 minutes before driving). No other engine problems, 1999 with 88,400 miles.

If it like most 2000 engines. they have bad piston slap. Ive got one that sounds like the pistons are trying to change holes when its cold.Check out Chevy Piston slap on Google. Lots of lawsuits over it. G.M. even buying some back.P.S. Mine only has 49000 miles on it!

Hi John,

Yep, gotta agree. Seems like GM has really let the quality thing go lately.

Time was when piston slap was considered taboo. Now, they will tell you it is a "normal" thing.

Trouble with the 5.3s is that they don't have much of a skirt and they rock on the pin 'til they warm to size.

Price of progress I guess,

Allan

Ron, my dad has a 2004 chevy 1500 with a 5.3 vortec. like the other guys said, you will get about 15 mpg. when my dad hauls his tractors (john deere A: 7800 total weight) he gets about 9-10 mpg.

I have a 5.3 in my "99 pick-up. Completly empty , I get 15 mpg tops. When loaded and pulling a trailer(which is most of the time) , I get 10-1/2 to 11 mpg. The pick-up is 4 x 4 , Z-71 , with regular cab.

Ron,

They'll tell you 17 to 19. He can expect around 15 day in and day out.

Mine is a Yukon, smaller yet than a full blown Sub.

The 5.3 in the 05 models is a different engine,it has a Z71 block, aluminum heads,no radiator fan on the engine, now it's electric. The engine also runs on 4 cylindres when idleing.
