I know this is off the topic but i dont know who else to ask. I bought a old 1981 dodge half ton 2 wheel drive for a cheap work truck. It has a slant six and a833 four speed. The trans is my problem it sticks in first gear and somtimes acts like its in two gears and stalls the engine. All i have to do is get under it and tug on one of the shifter rods and that fixes it for awhile but it does this quite often. I was wondering a way to fix this or if there are any other good 4 speeds i can swap in?

Didn't read all the posts. You'll probably find if you pull some linkage loose is that it is wallered out and wore out. I've had some pins wore in half.

I had a truck like your. Every now and the my old dodge use to start shifting hard and sticking. I'd shoot some oil on the linkages. Would then shift like new for a while. Then start all over again. Oh , another puzzle; Seeing the truck has age on it , should the engine start stalling out , not run right , or leave you stranded , change that short crooked piece of fuel line which goes from the carb-over the top of engine. Under the clamp it will rust out enough to draw air , but not leak gas. Had it happen to first truck. Second identical truck was bought cheep due to always leaving owner stranded. Same problem. Changed that line , problem gone.

Get under there and look closly,that shifter has a grease fitting. It is hard to spot and usually gets no grease. Result is a hard shifting trans that hangs up between gears. Hard to believe how much difference a bit of grease means in that spot. I still have a 79 with that setup.

There is also a part in that shifter that wears and makes sloppy shifting. You disassemble the shifter and reverse the part for like new shifts. Been 10 years since I did that repair ,and have forgotten the exact details.

I have an 86 truck similar to yours. It has a 4 speed over drive transmission. The Factory manual shows two sets of roller bearings on the counter shaft at each end, a sign of the 4 speed and 3 speed heavy duty transmissions. They got over drive by using third gear, with ratio changes for od, and fourth for third, one to one ratio as is normal for high in most transmissions. To make the shift pattern normal they reversed the lever on the side of the transmission so it points down ther by changing the motion of the shift lever. All this means nothing to your problem, but is some information. As for the shifter, I think they may be Hurst or a similar looking. There is a way to grease it too, I think the owners manual says as I don't see it in the transmission section of my manual.I think you put it in revrse and a grease fitting is then available under or around the shifter pointing to the left. To align the shifter and "time" the transmission to it you put a 1/4" rod ( about 2 1/2" long, through the shifter body and shift arms in the shifter, the pin goes left to right at the bottom of the shifter housing. This will put the shifter in the neutral position. Now with the transmission levers on the side of the transmission in the neutral position, you adjust the linkage rods to fit between the transmission arms and shifter arms.It will help if you take the boot and plastic thing the boot screws to off, this thing looks like metal. This might make the grease fitting easier to find too. I hope this helps, and you have the same setup as I am assuming. If you have any more questions you can post here or e mail me. As I said I have the factory book. Oh, the transmission calls for ATF for oil, I know this is a little different, but mine has had ATF in it for 190,000 miles and still sounds good. I don't think 890-90 would hurt them, buy it would make for slower shifting when cold. This is not the heavy duty 4sp that someone else refered to. That one has a creeper gear for low and no overdrive, it is a real truck transmission. Very heavy duty for a 1/2 ton but they were available too, my brother got two new dodges, with slant sixes, with this transmission, one was maybe a 75 and the other a 87. It is his 87 book that I have, he gave it to me when he recently sold his 87. It matches almost everything on my 86. I can give you the gear ratios if you are interested, they are listed on the book too.Yours has a 3.09 low and the truck transmission has a 6.68 low ratio. It is a New Process transmission

Zachh and Wd tom, Do NOT put anything but ATF in that 4 spd overdrive Dodge transmission. The gears are fitted very tight on the top shaft in that transmission,and will seize from lack of lube if you use 80-90 in it. I learned that the hard way,I ruined one of those by being "good" to it by replacing that thin atf with nice thick 80-90.

Thanks for straightening me out on the proper oil. As I said, I have always used ATF, but now will be sure to continue to do so.

Bus Driver is on the right page.That's a light-duty trans w/shifter on side of trans.The shifter wears out over time & locks gears up.Trans itself should be ok.Junk yard or aftermarket;try summit racing @summitracing.com or 800-230-3030~brad

I know nothing specially about that transmission. The 4-speed Dodge I had used a New Process trans with the shifter lever coming out of the top of the transmission. Yours sounds more like a car transmission with the shifter mechanism bolted to the side of the trans. I suspect that linkage adjustment might help. Get a service manual for that specific model and try the adjustment.
