Hi all, sorry for the OT, but you all are so helpful and I'm stumped. My son had a radiator hose break and food the alternator on his 94 Ford PU. the volt meter on the dash imediately showed that it wasn't charging. He took the alternator off anf took it to local auto parts store and it tested ok. He reinstalled it and it still showed not to work. After it sit at work all day he restarted and at first still no charge then all of a suddent it started to work. I cant start to understand this. He used air gun to dry it out the night before but still it didn't work for 24 hours. I'm afraid for him to drive too far in case thers a loose connection or something.

Thanks

I generally replace the belt on my '94 F150 every 2 years, not because it needs it, but they will squeal when the weather gets wet. I've found my guages to be fairly accurate..... ...beats an idiot light.

We did check with a volt meter at the battery. It wasn't working. the idea about the belt slipping may be it. He said he could hear the engine slow when it started to show on the dash. It also died then but started right up and worked fine then.

sorry to hear u have a ford. anyway, with the engine running connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals and read the volts. should be somewhere between 13.8-14.4 volts if the alternator is charging. don't trust the dash gauges or meters.

Playfarmer; Anti-freeze is pretty slippery.I doubt the alternator ever came up to speed because of the coolant on belt & pulleys.A combination of this and a weak tentioner sounds like your problem.I would wash(soap & water) the pulleys, install new serpentine belt, and check/replace the tensioner.~brad

Don"t rely just on the dash gauge to be telling the truth. Use another method to see if it"s charging or not, something as simple as an ohm meter set on DC will tell you if it"s charging or not. Good chance it"s charging and there isn"t anything to be concerned with.

And be prepared that from now on that belt will squeak, wine and make noise becuase anti freeze got on the belt. It will expecaially do it in damp weather. It always did on mine.

belt squeeling, chirping, etc is mostly caused from worn tensioner pulley or idler pulley or the fan pully. some fan pulleys were made improperly (so says the local ford dealer) and that is a major cause of noise. also use a DAYCO brand grip belt and that will help stop the noise better than any other brand i have found. i have had 3 tensioners and 3 idlers and 13 belts on my 1993 F-150 and i still squeeks and chirps. Ford is junk in my reasoning, but can't get rid of it. i never will buy another ford product as long as i live.

My 2000 Chevy hasn't been that bad, but it has had the belt replaced twice in 60,000 miles. The tensioner was replaced also. Even after the belt being replaced two weeks ago, it still makes that sound like the waterpump is bad. The tensioner is fine though I'm told.

I just hate the noise. In my case, it could be too tight.
