Replaced out the batteries on my smoke detectors - all 9 of them in the house today. Try to do this yearly at the first of the year. We've had so many tragedies this fall/winter in the area, where the newscaster ends the report with, "smoke detectors weren't working," or "there were no batteries in the smoke detectors," or "the home had no smoke detectors." You all owe it to yourselves to check your detectors often, and replace batteries at least yearly. Note that smoke detectors themselves have a life span and should be replaced every few years. (Maybe one of our fire fighter/contributors can tell me the recommended replacement time.) I found one of mine that was malfunctioning today - replacement as soon's I get to the hardware store next time.

Aloha, Aloha, while setting off fireworks our fire alarm came on so at least I know it works.

Happy New Year

Shouldn't be setting off fireworks in your house - very hazardous, Especially with thached roofs!

Aloha, Yep, thatched roofs could be a problem for most of the natives, but we live in a cave so that's a plus.

Whether you have 4 or 900 in your home, as long they get fresh batteries on time or you have back up battery sys. or combination of the 2. Been changing batteries every 6 months on the non hard wired ones, which are not far from the the hardwired ones, which are over 25 years old. The batteries usually check oput with some life and are used for other applications, I think it's good "piece of mind" I installed Carbon Monoxide detectors as well.

Best friend was over new years eve, kind of troubled, and I can see why, he just heard through the grape vine about something that happened to a cousins family, just about 2 years ago. He had not visited in awhile, some distance, but like everyone you do your best when you can, other family members who should have told him the news did not, but 3 died and the other 3 suffer the permanent effects of this, being completely disabled. There is no doubt as to what can happen if you do not make sure to install a carbon monoxide detector and keep all your heating and any other carbon monoxide producing equipment in order, what happened to these people and so many others is very tragic. I think it may have been a clogged chimney that caused this, some mention of this, appears in this article, the news article is no longer available free:

One in each bedroom, (two upstairs, two on ground level.), two in large basement crafts/storage area where wife does sewing, spinning, and has 4-H crafts meetings, one in living room near up stairway, one in basement stairway, one in basement utility/laundry room. That's NINE! Oh, and a CO detector in dining room. Really don't feel as tho we're overprotected!

Thanks for the reminder...I am going to pick up batteries & change mine tomorrow... A few weeks ago, we had bad ice storms, most folks were with no power for days, some for over a week.. I lost count of how many people in our county died in fires.. Most of the fires were started by makeshift heating methods... really tragic...

Wife has been painting in the house.

I went to bed the other night with 3 NG heaters and a couple of electric space heaters running in house and thought to myself, I will check all batteries tomorrow. Well, next evening after work, I went to check all detectors to find they had ALL been taken down and were in a box IN THE GARAGE. I went on a 30-45 minute rage and preached over and over how we are lucky to be here today. She got the point, probably 10 times over. I don"t ever like to yell at my wife but some things need to be emphasized. I went to big blue home improvement store next day and bought a couple extra to have them in every room. They are too cheap to not use them. (Carbon Monoxide detectors included).

always good when you change the batteries in your smoke detectors to test and attach the date of the last change. manufacturers of battery powered smoke dectectors will recommend battery change intervals. and it can vary with the type of battery you are using, alkaline, rechargeable, cheapo etc. etc. i have electric smoke detectors connected to the security system with a battery backup in my house. i always test at least once a month. and for those first installing them always place in front of bedroom doors, kitchen and utility areas.
