I use my 95 GMC pickup daily in my business and don't have a lot of time to do an engine swap, which I can tell will be in the near future. Is there any reason not to rebuild the 89 350 (5.7 liter) I have from another truck and stick that in when the time comes? I was just going to swap in the long block with heads, using manifolds, and externals from the 95 305 (5.0 liter). Will the computer be confused? Or will it not care?
Thanks!
Truck

Truck,

You"ll have to change the flywheel, dampener and add the timing tab at the front cover as the two engines balance and time differently; otherwise, this long-block swap is a total walk-on.

If you live anywhere except California, forget the computer, as it automatically compensates.

Allan.. to see if I understand you correctly...If I leave the current flywheel, and timing cover on the 350 then it will be a drop in? ( we are dealing with the same transmission altho one is 2wd and the 350 is coming out of a 4 x 4...)

If you use the 305 heads on a 350 you will have to much compression!A 350 has a 76 CC head and the 305 had low 60's to high 50's I think. I tried this on a carb motor and I couldn't get it to stop pinging with out kicking the timing way back or using HIGH octane gas. The computer will work but it won't run up to its full potential.

The 350 will be a bolt in to your truck as the change came in 96 to the vortec engine. The computer will adapt the fuel ratios to the 350 but it would be better to have a 350 prom chip in your computer. You could just buy a Hypertec aftermarket chip and you would be good to go. No need to worry about running lean with the 305 chip as the O2 senser will not allow that to happen.

I believe there is a difference in the engines. There is a break for interchance at around 1993 I think. You will also have to change the computer when changing to a 350 engine, different fueling requirements will cause it to run lean and possibly hot with the 305 computer. Also might be cheaper and time effective to buy a new 305 from GM.3 year 36 mo warranty, priced at around $1500 at local dealer for a long block.

No need to swap the computer. The computers are the same for all size engines in a given truck. It's the PROM or chip that you can change. The computer will widen the injector pulse width to compensate for the added fuel requirements of the larger engine. If you feel it is down on power after drivin it though, you can buy a 350 PROM for your year truck at the GM dealership for about 70 dollars. Most folks who do the swap, are happy with how it runs and never feel the need to swap to the bigger PROM though.
